I'm looking at a 1951 MD serial #FDBK285487 located in western Pa. Asking price is $3000. I really love those diesels. Tractor is in very restorable condition, straight tin,no welds or breaks, good tires, ect. The owner sounds very knowledgeable and fair I'm interested in anyones comments since i'm not well versed on the m series. Tractor has Disc brakes (owner says factory installed M&W prototypes)Factory 12volt,live hydraulics,36"rubber,and factory 2 speed (this is the one I have no Knowledge about. Would appreciate any advice.

They are getting "collectible" and expensive. There was one in pretty bad cosmetic shape, but ran well (owner started and ran it for me) at RPRU this year. I believe it was one of the more well-known salvage yards that owned it. He wanted $2700 if I remember right. I didn"t stay till the end of RPRU so I don"t know if he sold it or not. 12 years ago I paid $500 for mine. Back then everybody was scared of gas-start diesels and didn"t want any part of them. Times change, I guess. Brian

All of the MDs were 12 volt from the factory. They had two 6 volt batteries connected in series. One battery under the fuel tank like the gas M and the second one beside the seat support on the right hand side. The seat support had a cutout in it to accomodate the battery box. Later MDs may have had the under seat battery box like the supem Ms. But as far as I know no MDs were 6 volt systems. The generator setup with the casting support sounds like the original setup. The factory 2 speed and the disk brakes are not factory, but aftermarket add ons. The "2 speed" is probably an M&W 9 speed setup which gives 2 speeds in each of gears 1 through 4. This setup makes the PTO run faster than standard in high range. The disk brakes are likely the Lambert after market brakes. These are similar to but different than the brakes on the super series. They have 3 bolts holding the castings to the transmission housing instead of 5 as the supers do.

Thanks for the insite Nat2 That was some of my concerns also. The only thing I will have to say about the 12 volt system is it was an older style delco remy 12 volt generator located in view on the right side of the engine below the hood. It was mounted on a casting that looked correct and factory. (no all thread or 28 washers for shims)know what I mean?

Yep, I know what you mean. Delco made generators in both 12V and 6V versions. You could bolt a 12V generator and regulator right in there, and it'd look factory. I'm just pretty sure it isn't.

I can't give you any help or advice but I can tell you a little about the 2-speed otherwise known as a 9-speed . It gives 4 extra forward speeds and 1 extra reverse speed . I have the M&W aftermarket kit on my M . I love it . The one on mine is like an overdrive , 1-4 are all a little faster and 5th is not changed . I can't give you the exact speeds but someone else here may be able to if you are interested . Mine shifts with a push-pull cable through a hole in the front right of the clutch housing , it can be shifted from the seat with a knob on the right of the steering post . 4th high is around 7 mph I think maybe a bit more . My parts book shows that disc brakes were standard after serial # FDBK 285505 on the MD .
Good luck with whatever you decide ! ..Randy

Man, he saw you coming... Good thing you didn't bite, because you would've gotten bit.

There is no such thing as "M&W prototype" disk brakes. They're probably just Lambert aftermarket disk brakes, which are somewhat common. The last 2000 Ms had factory disk brakes, but this one is one year too old for that.

"Factory" 12 Volt? I'm pretty sure that even the diesels were 6 Volt. Only the WD9 was factory 12 Volt at that time. Look up under the hood. If there's an alternator there, it's a conversion.

"Factory" 2 speed? No such thing. There's an M&W "9 speed" add-on that gives you four additional gears between 4th and 5th.

36" rears are wrong, too. Should be 38".

Unless the tractor is cherry, it's worth about half what he's asking.

Hi Nat 2 , I'm going to step out on a limb here and disagree with the 12 volt issue . MD's where 12 volt at least by my parts book . Granted I don't have any personal experience with a MD because I once thought that they didn't have carburetors ;-) . Now I have my trusty parts book ! ( TC-28H ) All the lights are listed as 12 volt for the MD . So unless they had a step up inverter on them I think they must have had a 12 generator . If I'm wrong I'll take the lumps . Respectfully yours ...Randy
