Can any one tell me who made the distibutor on the M ? Was it a prestolite or an autolite ? I went to check on the pertronix ignition at Carquest and was asked which one it was so I came home and looked but couldn't figure it out . I looked in the parts book and that didn't help either . Supermpuller posted on the 28th that part # 1442 was for a SM . Are they the same ? A super m was 12 volt from the factory wasn't it ? If so , that part # will fit a 12 volt m regardless of the distributor ? The guy at this farm country Carquest didn't even know what an M was much less who made it and the guy was around 60 ! The price told me was 72 and change without tax .Thanks for any more info on this ..... .Randy

IH did't install distributers on Ms until about 1950, so if your tractor was built before that, you've got a replacement. If it is the 90 degree drive, it's a Delco in all probability.

Thanks , No it points to the rear . I just went out there and scraped soom paint off and found a number that I didn't see yesterday . It is part # 353 898 but I can't make out what's after that so I'll assume that it's - R11 - . That part # is in the book . So that makes it a IH . But it's an after thought ? Both my parts books ( original copies of TC-28F and H ) indicate the H-4 went to serial # 22973 which is 1940 . Could the distributor package be ordered on a new tractor after 1940 ? Did people order tractors back then or did they just buy what was on the lot ? Or was that the time they started the field improvement package ? Thanks...Randy

Randy Ia, 1442 is the no for the pertrox, and be sure to get the coil to go with it, has different resestince than any other coil. Just put one on my Super M and very happy with it. I also got a J D A with electronic ign on i,t and they both will start 100% better that they ever did. Also they have to be 12 volt neg ground to do all this Jack in Fla

Hi Jack , I'm soo confused . You are still talking about a SUPER . I have a straight M . I'm going to have to assume they are the same . But since you have recent experience and I haven't worked on a point system in a coon's age is this a straight forward install ? Pull the cap , rotor , cover and points out and screw the new in and set the timing ? It's been converted to 12 volt but still has the 6 volt coil with resister . Thanks !

The original distribitors for all letter series tractors were basicly the same. The only difference is advance curve. Have swapped distribitor from 400 onto 1941 A and it works fine.

Randy-Ia, Mine was a 53 super, I converted to 12v. Yes take points out and install new part. All instructions are in the box. Be best to put new coil in with unit (higher voltage). Also forgot to say that you have to open up plug gap to 45. Retime with lite and you are good to go. You will be happy. Jack in Fla

Hi Thanks ! I know I'll like it when I get it done . The thought just crossed my mind to put on a MSD multi-spark box . Anyone ever tried this ?

IH made their own but there were aftermarket Delco units too.

The original distribitor was made by IH. Both Delco and Prestolite ( maybe Autolite too, Prestolite and Autolite products were made by same company at least at one time) made aftermarket distribitors. The shaft in Delco has 90 degree bend with cap turned straight up.

A Super M is still 6 Volt. I believe the 450 was the first Farmall to come from the factory with 12 Volt electricals as standard equipment.

There should be an identification tag on the distributor.
