1950 cub cranks, fires, sputters (sometimes runs for 5 seconds) then quits. Gray to black smoke from exhaust when cranking. Had dealer overhaul carb - same problem. Pulled plugs re-gaped, no change.....

When you pulled the plugs, were they wet? If they were dry I would have someone try and start while you hold your hand over the throat of carburetor. If it starts keep choking it with your hand. Keep an eye on the oil pressure gauge
to see if you have pressure. The Cubs have history of losing oil pressure.

I would loosen the gas line fitting at the carburetor to be sure gas is draining to the carburetor. If the plugs were wet, I would shutoff the gas and remove the plugs and let them dry. Then turn on the gas for a few seconds & shut it off. Then see if the engine will start, if it starts open the shutoff just a little. Hal

Is this 6 volts or 12 volts with a ballast resistor? If you have a bad resistor the engine
will run some until you release the starter switch. Hal

Are you sure the choke butterfly is open? Sounds like its getting too much fuel. Were the plugs wet? Pull the coil wire from the cap and hold within 1/4" of a good ground. Then attempt an engine start and watch your spark from the coil wire. Should be good hot blue spark. Use a pair of insulated pliers to hold that wire. If you have good fire here check the fire at your plugs.

Have you checked the points and condensor? How about the rotor and cap? I think I'd do an ignition tune-up. Replace those plugs, replace the points, condensor, rotor and cap. Might as well do the wires while you're at it. When the tune-up is done, re-check the timing.

Black smoke tells me its flooding. Turn off the gas and try to start it. If it fires up turn the gas back on fast.
