650 Diesel

I'm thinking about buying an IH 650 Diesel. The guy tells me it won't start on gas right now. He has pull started it to get it running. He was going to restore it but could not get around to it. My question is whether or not you can damage a gas-start diesel by pull starting it? Am I looking for trouble? I don't want to give him top dollar for something that I would later find out is a big expensive mess to fix. On the other hand, I hate to take a pass on a hard-to-find tractor like this. I am a letter and number series guy but don't have a whole lot of experience with wheatland diesels, but am willing to learn.

Can I ask what you paid for it?

jaybird2 the 650D are a nice tractor to run as Paul stated, we are in the middle of restoring a 650D there is one thing that I would definantly do before you buy it, we always crack the oil plug first before it has been run and if you get antifreeze out of there I would shy away or offer less because overhaul on them moters are very expensive, good luck thou, we have four gas start diesels and are very happy with them

Pull starting a 650 in diesel mode won’t cause any damage. And if it runs on OK on diesel it means the engine is basically sound.

The “no start” on gas is most likely an ignition or carb problem – either of which is relatively easily fixed. Or as Dave suggests below, problem could also be a changeover linkage adjustment or stuck starting valves - though the latter is highly unlikely.

If the price is reasonable I"d go for it!

not starting on gas is a normal problem with these old IH D's that have been setting around un-used for several years.....most of the time they just need carb & tank cleaned & a tune up - worst case senario is the "gas" valves are stuck , or (less likely) something is wrong or broke in the switch over linkage if the price is right ($2000+/-) and she has nice tin & a good trans./r.end....& the engine is otherwise good (head not cracked , good oil press , no smoke , knocks or "sputtering")- i'd go ahead & get it .....but make sure the engine & drive train are all good -costs 3-4 K for an engine rebuild !.....if it needs much work (other than not gas starting), then you'r better off to spend the extra for one in tip-top shape & ready for "cosmetic" restoration (i have one like that , just hollar if you'd like to "compare")

Thanks Dave, he's asking $3750 for it. Tires in rough shape, I haven't driven it yet to hear the tranny. Tin in fair shape and will take some work. Can't find any cracks in the block or head but you never know until you get it running. I was thinking that it should bring at least $1000.00 less for it's condition but don't know if this is fair as it seems they are harder to find.

By the way, you can see a picture of mine in the tractor photo gallery. Just do a search for 600D.

I think I paid around $2800 for my 600 ten years ago, but it is a nice running one. Sheet metal was okay, original paint, but the starting system was cobbled up and the starter needed to be rebuilt. So I wouldn"t think that IF the motor is basically okay and the head isn"t cracked, a price in the $3000 to $3500 range isn"t out of line with the way prices have been going up on machinery. Make sure he gets it running and listen for missing, puffs of blue/white smoke, look for bubbles in the radiator, etc. You can get used 18.4x34 tires that are nice pretty reasonably, they are common. If you have a salvage yard around you can even get the 7.50x18 fronts used, like I did. Many of the older combines used that tire on the back.
The other thing is, is it close to you? If you find one three states away for a thousand less, you"ll pay that back in trucking. It"s not something to put on a utility trailer! I use mine on the farm, and in the beginning, it was my biggest horse, so I"ve spent some time on it. I wouldn"t part with it. So if that one checks out, go for it!
Paul

That's good info, I appreciate it! I'll post something if I get my hands on it.
