on my super m connecting rods and rod caps there are numbers 1,2,3,4.i know the numbers on the rods and rod caps are supposed to be matched, but if its number 2 does that mean its supposed to be in #2 cylinder etc.when i took them out none of the #'s on the rods were matched to the same cylinder #.

Are you completely rebuilding the engine or did I miss an earlier post ? If you are doing a complete rebuild I'm guessing you are having a machine shop work over your rods and crank ? You should . Any way if that's the way you're doing it put them back in in order with the new piston's/sleeves , That goes along with all the suggestions everyone else made here . It just is a reasurance to me that when I open an engine up and see that it's been rebuilt that the rebuilder was fussy about how it was put together . Neatness counts .

It doesn't matter where you put the rods, but why not put them in order?

And, almost always, the rods are numbered on the side that faces the side of the engine where the camshaft is located.

If you are re-using the pistons, you'll want to put them back in the same hole. Usually, the pistons are not numbered, and having the rods numbered is a convenient way to keep the pistons in order.

I think you should ask your local auto machine shop for their opinion. I would put them in correctly. Hal

That was the intent. Somewhere along the way somebody overhauled your SM and they weren't real fussy about it. The main thing is to keep the rods and rod caps together and aligned the same way. The correct cap aligned properly on the correct rod will give you a perfect bore hole for connection to the crank. Others will have a different opinion but I guess that I would leave the rods in the cylinders that they came out of. If they were working ok before then like they say: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
