Where can one purchase a set of quality, pre-made spark plug wires for say, a Super H? All the local Case IH dealer and the local Tractor Supply have are the "universal" kits which have stiff plastic wire, and these little ends that are IMPOSSIBLE to insert.

I know this has been asked before, but a search for "spark plug wires" comes up empty... ?

Dennis,
There are great wires (posted below) that are very original. They do, however, have a limitation I'd point out. They are very likely to produce radio static in electronic devices (TVs radios and more.
The NAPA stores (and others) have or can get Magnetic Supression Wires. They have a composite silicon rubber exterior (flexible, and heat resistant) And a wire wound core that eliminates radio static while providing full conductivity to the spark. They are used by several OEM manufacturers, and are tough. The original (I think) were made by Sorensen, but the patent has expired and others have gotten into production.

Jim, Over what distance do you think static is picked up from this type of wire? I am planning on putting them on my Super C and maybe another Farmall or two. Thanks for any additional info you might be able to share. Hal

It can be really aggravating when I'm trying to watch a ballgame on TV in my buddy's shop and he's out running the H or M within about two hundred feet or so of the building. You definitely can get a good feel for the firing speed of the M with the pop & jump on the TV screen!

The magnetic suppression wires eliminate the static at the source. All electrical flow creats magnetism the spark plug wires are really just good antennas when made with regular stranded copper. The wound wires are made to dampen the emitted magnetism.

Regular wires can send static about a mile. Some electrical devices can "hear" the static even further away than that.

Carbon impregnated, or ferromagnetic powder wires also eliminate static, but they are not as reliable in strength, nor as long lasting. These resistor style wires also increase the voltage required to jump the gap at the plug. This can be a good thing as higher spark voltage is usually better.

The truth is that if the plug fires the mixture, its job is done, the flame front in the chamber does the rest. I like to set the plugs .005" wider in gap and use the Magnetic Suppression Wound wires. They are deluxe.

I'll have to add my weight for the Brillman company. Original in every respect, priced quite reasonably and a very helpful man to deal with if you are unsure of anything.

I have to agree with George I have bought plug wire sets from the brillman co. before and they are great quality and fit perfectly.

Dennis,

Why don't ya want to build your own? I just did this set fer $5 and 20 minutes time.

Got the fixin's from Car Quest. They told me that nobody, but nobody builds their own anymore. That's why the parts were so darned cheap. :>)

Hey Allan...

I don't mind building my own, if the materials aren't utter CRAP, like the ones they tried to pawn off on me at the local CaseIH dealer.

I want plug wires with flexible rubber insulation, not the stiff plastic insulation in that kit. I want crimp-on connectors, not those little "pokey thingies" in that kit that bend over at the drop of a hat, and won't poke into the wire for love or money. Dad bought one of these kits for his 400, and we spent many hours cussing and swearing at whoever came up with the idea.

Yeah, I hear ya,

I didn't know that they still made those silly "pokey" kind anymore. Thought they were for carbon filled wires anyway? :>)

Hope ya get 'er figured out.

Allan

Yep,

They didn't have anything in a made up set that wasn't carbon filled and this is what started me down the "build yer own" road in the first place. Even their "universal" sets were carbon filled. Don't work fer tractors.

I think the wire was something like 11 cents a foot fer 7 feet total. Something like that.

Partsman said it was an old spool of wire that had been laying around the store since forever.

Thanks, think I might try to locate some. Back in the dark ages when I pulled wrenches for a living we always made up the new plug wires when needed, I can't remember ever installing a set of pre-made wires.
