I visited a Case IH dealer over the holiday weekend. As I drove through the used tractor lot I saw three 1086's and one 1066.These tractors were wore plumb out!The 86's had the doors tore off,the cabs were all to pieces and who knows what else.I first thought about how tough these tractors had to be just to get this far. Then I felt sorry for them because I remember when these tractors came out new. They were good looking sound tractors ready for a days work.It just seems ashamed that have ended there days like this.I know we can not save them all from the salvage yard and I know that there are alot of parts on them that could be used I just think that when you see an old tractor like these regardless of there color you should tip tour hat to these old boys because they have made the American farmer the best there is.Sorry for the long post.I just wanted to vent a little.Happy New Year

In some parts of country Mississippi Delta for instance it is unusual for owner or even farm manager to actually operate equipment. The operation is left to hired hands and half of crew may turnover every year and they do not take care of equipment like owner operators. Some of these operations are well funded and quite sucessfull financeialy though. Have seen many of these tractors go through sale in Sikeston MO (after they were traded for new ones)and be bought by Midwestern buyers.

Jeff: May I remind you that your never going to see the volumes of these newer diesels with modern 3 point hitch, retired and in as great condition as the pre 1962 models. Therein lies the reason, first those old gassers soon became too costly and inefficient for modern day farming. Diesel power was the future. Secondly, tractors equiped with 3 point hitch are still as functional on the modern day farm as any tractor being built new in 2005. For those two reasons plus the capital cost of new equipment, many of these 60s, 70s and 80s diesels will hit the 30,000 hour mark, something unheard of 40 to 50 years ago.

As for the cabs you speak of with doors off, they were not that well built in the beginning. Many farmers found themselves rebuilding these cabs at little more than 10,000 hours. Just by design alone they were impossible to keep tight. In a lot of cases definately not abuse or neglect, however I will agree that factor can be in there.

Sounds more like lack of maintenance, rough usage and put away wet.Doors tore off? Cabs falling apart? Sounds like these tractors spent some time farming down in Hazzard County.....trying to out jump the General Lee.....
