I'm thinking of putting an electronic ignition system on my M next year and was wondering what experience people have with them. My tractor has a 12 volt alternator on it. If I convert to electronic ignition can I convert back later if I want to go back to more orignal equipment.

I just thought of something. Does your M have a mag or distribuor? If it has a mag, I do not thing you can put electronic ignition on it. Just a second thought on the subject.

I put an electronic ignition on my JD430U several years ago and then one on my SMTA last spring. Would never go back to points in either. If your 12 volt conversion used a resister ahead of the 6 volt coil, you will need to get a 12 volt coil, preferably the hot one sold by the electronic ignition supplier. If you want to convert back later there is no problem, nice thing about the electronic ignition is that you really don't notice any difference from points by looking at the outside of the distributor.

Hayfarmer, a six volt coil can be used with the electronic ignition. The black wire runs from the back side of the resister and red wire runs from front side of resister if memory serves me right. However going with the 12 volt coil will probably give better results. The electronic conversions sure do work a lot better than the points in my opinion.

Have installed the Pertronix on a couple of 9N Fords, customers said tractor never started that good. Sounds like the way to go.

Might want to check with a NAPA parts store, I don't have any electronic ignitions but the napa man quoted me a price about half of the pertronix.

Pertronix Ignitor, part no for SM is 1442 got it at NAPA around $75 dollars, installed it 7 years ago and never touched it since, used autolite 386 plugs, never fouled plugs either.
