Screw out the big nut on the front of the steering gear housing. It's opposite where the steering shaft goes in. If it is in there tight, get a 6 point socket (from a 3/4 drive set) of the proper size. It's should be a tight fit. A 12 point socket won't usually work. Once you have that big nut out and the universal in the steering shaft at the center of the tractor loose, you can screw the shaft right out the front. Nothing else needs to come out. i don't know what the screw is you are talking about. Sounds like someone drilled the cap so a grease fitting can be put into shoot grease into the steering gear.

If you mean big nut in front top of bolster at steering gear I have never seen one with screw in it. It should srew out. If it is badly rounded off so that you can not get a good hold on it might have to loosen it up with hammer and chisel and find replacement nut. They would be easy to find here.

If its anything like on a 450 which it should be. You unhook the steering coupler and then it just screws right out. Not really hard to do but can be a little bite of a pain at times. I should just screw right out of the coupler as it does the steering.

do you mean just spin out the steering shaft after you take it off at the universal?does the big nut just screw out with the rod?i tried doin that earlier today,i put a pipe wrench on the rod and pulled downed with all of my body weight and it never moved.i wus afriad to pull harder because i didnt know if i would break the worm gear or somthing else in there.

It should screw out to the front of the gearbox. The worm & shaft are one piece, I think. The bearing is held on with the nut / cotter key.

I should have added to my post that the bearing doesn't have to be removed. It comes out with the worm & shaft.

Yep should pop out but at times the baerings are tight and don't want to come out. You may have to take the top cover off if it has one and help the bearing out.
