How far can you Bore out a Farmall MD block before getting to thin on the water jackets. The bore of the block is 4.125 now. I want to make the cylinder in the block to a bore 4.25, 4.375 or how big can i go. I want to get away from using the dry sleeve but still doing some farm work with it. Is this a wrong idea from getting away from the dry sleeve or what??

I have a MD block with old sleeves in it, would be willing to sell. Or you could find a 450D block that bolts in and you would have 4 1/8" pistons.

I have three bad cylinders that are egg shaped. When i tore this motor down two of the sleeve had cracks around the top and one was in pieces in the bottom of the oil pan. so i have to bore some to get my block back in a usable state. So I'm safe to bore it to 4.25 using a sleeve or not?

More than likely, however you should consult a good machine shop to make sure. Usually, dry sleeved engines can be repaired by boring out and putting a permanent sleeve back in. Then that permanent sleeve is bored to fit the replaceable liner. That way the block isn’t the wearing surface and can still be repaired using available parts.

Leave the sleeves in there. MD blocks are rare and expensive, don"t wreck the one you"ve got. There are much easier and effective ways of increasing the horsepower of a diesel, such as turning up the pump.

I don't understand getting away from the dry sleeves. The diesel is high compression, and trying to raise it may cause other mechanical problems. On top of that, you are ruining an item through wear which is no longer being manufactured, whereas it can be resleeved many times.

I don't know a lot about this. But I talked to a guy and he said ya could take out sleeves,and bore out put in 350 chevy pistons.

Bill, had to read this post couple of times to figure out why it made me think. Finualy dawned on me what made me sit up and think, It is that Chev 350 only has a 4 inch bore, same as 327ci. Only thing different is that they changed height of wrist pin on 350 from the 327..
