I raise a couple steers each year and I think I may have a problem. I purchased 3 calves last spring I started them on milk replacer and had very good luck. For a short time I purchased a good qaulity calf feed and then ground feed from a local farmer. Now I am grinding my own feed; whole cob corn, oats and dry molasis. The steers are about 9 months old they eat well and look good but they seem to be "loose" almost like a dairy cow not as bad as a scour calf. In the past I could go several days with out adding bedding but now I most add it each day. Historically I have never given any inoculations (SP) but I am wondering if I brought something in my barn from elsewhere. I cut back on grain for a long time and it seemed to have no effect. I am in western newyork. They are inside and out of drafts. Any ideas would be appreciated.

what kind of hay are you feeding? If the hay has a high percentage of alfalfa you can expect them to be loose. Are you feeding too much protein supplement?

I would think the manure from the steers would be similar to dairy cattle. They eat about the same food. We never had cows with the skitters
unless they were out on green grass in the early
spring. We fed the silage to them too, soon after filling the silos and this caused the skitters too. Cattle manure is usually loose.

You may want to discuss this with your local vet.
He may want a sample of their manure for analysis. Hal

We typically raise steer calves all year around, this last bunch we raised 44 of them. Are your calves in a big enough area for them, and are they outside?

I agree with billde, bigger calves like that need space and fresh air, although that might not be your entire problem.

12x12 is not enough area they need to excersize. Part of the problem may be stress related. How big are these calves?
