I have a 1947 Farmall H that has a high idle, it won't idle back down after accelerating. I put a kit in the carb. but still have the same symptom-problem. If you try to start the tractor without accelerating it acts like it wants to run at a very low idle but dies. Is this related to the governor?

If you do try running it with the plate off the side of the govenor have an open 5-gallon bucket at hand. It's amazing how well lubricated the govenor is.

After checking everything else, see if the throttle plate is mounted on the throttle shaft the right side up. After a mechanic rebuilt the carb on our smta, it wouldn't idle down, probably 800 to 900 rpm was all. After many years of this, I took the carb off , and found the throttle plate problem. The throttle plate has a bevel on the "edges" so it will close tight on the bore of the carb. Hope this helps.

Are you sure you have the carb/gov tube shaft on the right way. Putting them back on can be a little tricky and if you don't get the nipple in the slot the right way it does all sorts of funny things.

could be the governor but a more common problem is the throttle shaft between the gov & carb.

I had the problem before I put the kit in it and think I had the tab aligned correctly when I reattached the carb to the governor shaft? When I removed the carb it appeared to be aligned too?

how badly worn is the tab? It needs to fit snug in the slot to avoid erratic throttle control.

It appeared to be fairly tight, I purchased this tractor in May and the throttle condition came with the tractor unfortunately. I will remove the carb again and check the tab tomorrow. I did notice the linkage to the governor to be snug without any play, before I reinstalled the carb.

It could be you need to synchronize the gov. to carb linkage, get a IT manual it will tell you how.

I'd check the bearings in the govenor. If the tractor set for a long time, the bearings may have rusted up. You can remove the cover on the gov., and run the tractor to see if everything is working OK. ken
