Mornin' Guys,

On advice from lots of folks here, I swapped out the 'A' and 'B' capsules on the control valve and gave 'er a little test run.

Got just a "slight" improvement in the forward range and completely lost all engine braking, which I'd expect.

This is smelling more and more like a charge pump problem to me.

Dunno, I'm thinking it would be easier to haul the tractor to town and let the big boys play with it rather than buying a set of those darned 10,000 lb gauges.

Plus, I just simply don't know what I'm donin'. :>)

Whadda think?

Allan

If the pressure and relief valves are working properly, then I am afraid that chequebook time is approaching. Never had to do a pump in any of my Hydro tractors (656,70,and 86). However, the 86 was purchased used, and although it had a 310, the old 282 would outpull it with not working too hard. When I traded the 86 in 2001, I wrote on the contract that the transmission was defective. Here in Quebec, if you sell or trade a vehicle with a known or hidden defect, the seller is liable!! The tractor was purchased by a farmer who used it to blow snow, grind feed, and power a corn drier. I told the selling dealer that the unit would be OK for that, just do not try to pull a heavy load. The tractor has yet to be repaired. QR

Allan, Think this is what you need. Picked it up in a box of junk last summer. I think I have a couple of 10,000 lbs oil filled gages. If I can find them will ship one to you if you want it.

Buying the gauges will run you about 60-80- bucks for the liquide filled ones getting the lines and fittings for that pressure now that's another thing you sure don't want to put a line from the fitting to the gauge that is rated only for 3000 to 5000 as that is a bomb waitng to go off . I have two nice 4 inch gauges ( for the old farts that can't see to well) that i got for 34 bucks apice but needed my NITRO PILLS for the lines and fittings.

Well,

Thru the process of elemination, I can just about see this one coming down the road at me and it all kinda just "falls in line" with the way it is acting too. Sort of like a hitch that will lift just fine 'til ya hook 'er up to something that really needs lifting. :>)

What gets me is that it is so darned strong in reverse, but now, I'm thinkin' that is probably due to the gear reduction.

Six of one and half dozen of another, I guess. Bought the ol' heifer thinkin' it needed an engine. Turns out the engine is just fine and she needs some attention at the box.

Old tractors are fun, 'taint they? :>)

Yea , i know all about it , like the 1486 that i bought that only needed a clutch yea wright , I knew going into it that the the guy said that the T/A shift cable was stuck ( because the T/a was out for a long time and that they did not use it ) But i can FIX that and the price was still wright and i drove the tractor around the farm before handing him the check well when i got it home and was moving it around the neighbor cam over and tells me that it is missing ya could not hear it of fell it in the cab so i have him drive it and yes it is missing so i pull the hood off and the valve cover off and # 4 rocker arms are not moving much wiped cam ok get it in the shop and start pulling it down found that evey gear in the speed trans was JUNK and top and bottom shaft is JUNK and all bearings are junk and the list kept growen but i can fix it well i am still not done with this education prosess this tractor was beat to death with only 4200 hours but i can say that i have learned about EVERY NUT BOLT WIRING AND THE REST OF THE 86 seires first hand .

Yep, and i had to find the grand master's tractor . Told the wife that before i am done with it that i could have bought it new for less . Also told her that i will die with that tractor and when i did she is suppose to prop me in the seat and dig a big hole and plant me and the tractor together.

You had better put a good loader on that tractor to dig a hole that big, like a Westendorf. Hal
PS: Some people would sell their grandmother down the road and not even bat an eye. I bet all those new cars that were flooded in LA will end up on a car lot.

I had bought 5 tractors over the years. 2 from neighbors. One I knew needed some work.I just didnt realize how much. 2 from a dealer of which one was a cosignment sale of some sort. The consignment sale tractor needed more work then the wife had money so we sold it. #5 was from a relative. Spent alot of time trying to fix it before I sold it.

Question. What do you do when you buy a tractor from a neighbor and it ends up having a cracked block or cracked head. Anyway,a tractor that needs alot more work then he lets on.

Ya just smile and become drinking buddy's with the partman and then ya just wait your chance to GET EVEN or you can do like all yuppy's would do SUE him in some stated it is a crime to sell something with a cracked block or head or welded frame.unless you are told of such and agree to the sale as is where is. I have got hammered on a couple tractors over the years and just rack it up to tuition as it is part of the learning experance in dealing with old equipment and if ya realy want and education just start dealing in Dozers and such they will learn ya quick.

tractor vet.

Never sued anybody but I did sorta get even with one of the neighbors. I worked as a self employed electrician at the time. He called and wanted some rewiring done on his house so I was able to pad the bill some. He never said anything about the tractor or the bill. Once I got it fixed it turned out to be a good tractor.
