My brother is supposed to help a guy replace the clutch in an M. Somebody told him that they don't have to split the tractor to do this. Has anybody replaced the clutch in an M without splitting the tractor? The only M we had was way back in 1946, so I don't remember much about it.

Thanks, guys.

Usually when a clutch needs serviced , it pays to check around in the clutch department for any leaks which might cause the new clutch to prematurely fail. Also, by splitting the tractor, the flywheel can be inspected for flat& other problems. Hard to do from down under. Been there.

You do not have to split the M to remove and replace the clutch. Kind of a dirty job down under the tractor and the space is tight. You will need to remove the cross shaft that works the clutch release fork. The fork is keyed to the cross shaft with heavy washers that are held into slots in the cross shaft by the clamp bolts. Take the bolts out that hold the clutch release carrier to the clutch housing, and disconnect the main drive shaft in front of the transmission. That requires removing 4 tapered shoulder bolts which may be jamed in there tight. You'll likely need to get new rubber washers and cup shaped retainer washers for the main shaft joint. When all that is loose, take three of the six bolts out that hold the pressure plate to the fly wheel(every other bolt) Put washers on the bolts and put them back in the three holes in the clutch that had no bolts and tighten them up. This compresses the clutch springs so the clutch plate is released. With all other things disconnected, you can now tilt the main drive shaft enough to clear everything and slide it out of the clutch. Good luck!

Both clutch disc and pressure plate will come out the bottom of mosts Ms. Super Ms and very late Ms have 12 inch clutch and pressue plate will not come out bottom on these. It probaly could be possible that early M could have been upgraded to larger clutch.

I have a neighbor who claims it is possible to replace the clutch on a super M without splitting the tractor. Since he has Farmed with a super M that he bought when the tractor was just 3 years old, and always did his own repair work, I think he probably knows.

Disc yes pressure plate no. Believe me in is real pain to get disc back in. This is from personal experience. The I&T manual says "To remove the clutch cover assembly which is used with the 12-inch diameter lined clutch disc on late production M, MV, MD, MDV and all Super M, MV, MD and MDV tractors, it is necasary to disconnect the clutch housing from the engine. The lined disc, however, can be removed through the opening in the bottom of the housing." I know I$T manual has been known to be wrong.

No you don't have to split the tractor. I replaced the clutch on my '51 M by dropping the belly pump only. Some people even relate stories of replacing the clutch in the field.

You will have to split it to replace pressure plate &/ or clutch disc. Not too bad of a job if you have a level floor.
