I don't get a reply on the green board. So I will ask for help here. My dad has green blood.he has a 40-U. It has a clutch problem.when he pushs the pedal it creeps. and you can not shift. We put a clutch kit in it last summer. all new parts. Any ideas what we did wrong? Here is a red question. I got a f-12 if I pull it 10 yards or put flat belt to the BN it starts good. If I try to use the hand crank seems like I can crank for ever, and all I get is a few pops. Can anybody tell me the right way to start the old sweet heart.
Thanks Bill

Here's hopeing everbody had a merry christmas & happy newyear!

On the 40 clutch...I think it is similar to my 430. If yo can't get it to adjust up it could be a problem in the adjusting cam, it may be badly worn where it fits in the through out bearing carrier. Other possibility is the tube that the through out bearing carrier rids on may be loose. Either way yo have to split it.

If the impulse on that F-12 or F-anything is'nt clicking, you will have a weak spark, and it is dangerous to the person on the end of the crank. That clicker stops and holds the internal workings of the magneto, when the engine gets past top dead center it releases, running the armature thru the magnets much faster then it would otherwise run. If it isn't clicking it can also kick like a old grey mule, break your thumb, break your arm, dislocate your shoulder, the possibilites are endless. The spark control lever shoul be straight up and down (12 o'clock) when attempting to start. At home when I was a kid, if the F-12 had set long enough for the gas to evaporate out of the carburetor, we unscrew the top nut or plug, what ever it is in the top of that castiron bulb connected to the fuel lines that sticks thru the hood, and poured it full of fresh gas. Usually one or two turns of crank and it started.

I looked for your post on the JD Board. Didn't see one. Try adjusting the clutch. It should have 1 1/2" of freeplay. Loosen the jam nut on the adjusting cam. That is just below the serial# tag on the left side. Then turn the adjusting cam{the center bolt with the flat sides} clockwise to increase the freeplay or counter clockwise to decrease freeplay.

Are sure the clutch is adjusted with enough freeplay? Have you checked the compression on the F12? You may need to use your BN with the flat belt to crank the engine for this. The readings should be close to one another. Make sure it's getting fuel and check the mag for a good hot spark. Use only copper plug and coil
wires. Your coil may be getting weak if it has
a weak spark. New plugs, points and condenser
make a big difference when hand cranking. Set those points to .013" on the high lobe of the cam
in the mag. Hal

sounds like you didn't get the clutch asdjusted right. I can tell you that F12s are tempermental. Yours is not the first one with this problem. The timing is quite critical and then somtimes I wonder if they arn't getting fuel right off?

Cowman, concerning the F-12. I don't know a lot about magnetos, but if the impulse wasn't working on the mag, wouldn't it be hard starting with the handcrank, but start fairly easy when pulled?

Tempermental starting?? The F12 we had when I was little would start good when the engine was cold. 2-3 pulls of the crank. We could hardly get it to start when the engine was warm. Fuel?
