686 IH Questions

Here are some questions about the 686 IH I posted about last week. My brother has it home over the weekend to try it out. Here are a couple things we noticed:

1. the steering wheel has to be slowly, but steadily turned to the left to keep the tractor steering straight. Approx. 360 rotation in 1/4 mile at highway speed. Why is it doing that?

2.Can hear a quiet whine noise from the transmission area when moving and not moving. Any reason for concern?

3.I thought it had excessive blowby out the breather, but we discovered it is only when at an idle. When at operating speed, you can't see any smoke from the tube. Is this reason for concern?

4. TA seems to be very good.

We are new to IH. I really appreciate any advice you can give. Price is $10,000. What do you think?

For the steering problem you have a internal leak somewere's, most likelly a oring in the pilot valve or in the front bolster. The whining sound could be normal or maybe not I would have to hear it could be a loose bearing? What engine does it have? If its the 312 diesel blowby even a lot of it at idle is normal. The 686 is one of the best IH chore tractors ever made, I sure like mine. $10000 is on the high side for the tractor you describe as it requires some work maybe some major work if you have to tear into the transmission for bearings. I would offer $6500 and deal from there.

Hey M Nut!

Boy! That really sounds like a goodie!

The whine you hear are the hydraulics working and the blow-by is plumb normal.

Kinda sounds like a bad spring in the control valve and the thing isn't centering; this could be why you are "hearing" a little excessive hydraulic noise too.

If everything works except that goofy steering, sounds like a keeper!
