I am currently restoring a Farmall C. I am putting the motor back together, when putting all the push rods back into the holes, all of the push rods go all the way in, except for one, which is about a quarter inch higher then the rest of them. When the engine is turned over, all of them move up and down except for that one. Does anyone know why this is happeneing, and if they do, how do I fix it?? Merry Christmas!!!

I would agree with Turk with a stuck lifter. It could be from sludge or rust. If you free it, I pull it and clean it and the bore, then oil them. Hal

The C doesn't have a cover, you will have to look up from the bottom, and I am not positive that you can see it then, but I bet a lifter is stuck, you may be able to free it from the to by tapping on the pushrod, but don't get too carried away. Make sure the pushrod is seated on the lifter correctly first.

I would check to see that your lifter isn't stuck, there should be a cover on the same side of the engine that your push rods are on that you can remove and inspect the lifters. Good luck. Seth

I think they are not removable from the top, and the cam must be removed to pull them from the bottom. They (if I recall correctly)are mushroom lifters more or less "T" shaped. I would open the bottom end and look at it. What you will find is a rusty lifter in its bore. From the top looking into the push rod hole (though you won't see much) you will be able to see where to put PB Blaster or other penetrating fluid.

Turn the engine till the lobe on that lifter is down, away from lifter.
Use a nice piece of 5/16 mild steel rod with a ball shape ground into one end. Place this in the pushrod hole in the resess in the lifter, and mark the rod with tape just where it goes into the head. Tap gently using a small ball peen. If it moves any at all (probably), go below and use a piece of 1/2" birch dowel rod to tap it back up (do not whack hard in the up direction the lifter "mushroom" can crack off, then you are into a cam removal!!). If it moves continue (up down, up down) till it is free and loose. Then oil it with engine oil cut 50/50 with gasoline. The rusty stuff will drip out the bottom.
Do this till the rust stops comming out (might be five minutes, might be an hour). Rust is Iron Oxide a very nice abrasive, so it is important to remove. If it does not move, use a propane torch to heat the casting in the area of the bore from below, and tap more. A propane torch will not have the heat capacity to over heat the system if used for 10 minutes or so.
if there is rust on the cam lobe polish it, and the lifter contact area with 400 grit silicon carbide paper.
Spray it clean with brake clean, and relube with lubriplate engine assembly grease on the contact surfaces, and straight engine oil down from the top. Good luck. I got help on this engine from this forum little more than a year ago. The issue was identical (we thought the head or pushrods, or cam, or rockers or valve job were causing geometry problems. It was 6 stuck lifters.
Good tapping. (never tap on the lifter with the cam lobe up!!!).
