I have a Farmall M with a 12V generator. I was wondering if this was stock or not. I always thought that all M s were 6V (although my knowledge is pretty limited so I could easily be wrong)but this is making me think different. It is a generator not an alternator and all the mounting hardware looks stock not homemade. Is this original or an older well done conversion?? Thanks

done a bunch of them this way atleast they look stock and will do a good job of charging the battery even at nite with moderen lites on them as up till about ten years ago i had several guys around my area that farmed in the evenings with old equipment and worked a full time day job and there old M's and MTA's would suffer from low or dead batterys every day from the night work so i started having the gen. changed over to 12 volt and installing Group 27-31 batterys and setting the voltage reg. up for a 27-30 amp charge rate that way the 15 amp draw of the lites and the 3-4 amp draw of the coil would leave some left over for keeping the battery charged the down side was that the reg. would last about two seasons .

My Dad conveted all of his Ms to 12 volt generators. There was no way you could tell 6 volt from 12 voly without looking at data plate. In fact I believe any good generator shop can convert original 6 volt to 12 volt.

Gas start, diesel run "M"s and many other IH/Farmall units were 12v (pos ground)from the factory.
There are no problems making the switch. It can even be easily switched to common Negitive ground.
Use a neg ground voltage regulator, repolarize the generator, and use a 12v coil for no resistor (or put in a resistor with original coil) with the neg terminal connected to distributor points.
