What is a compatible primer for IH red 2150 other than the IH brand. Dont want to drive 60 miles for a can of paint.

I would use epoxy primer (two part). It sticks better to the metal and the paint will stick better to it. Otherwise use the CIH primer -- if you are not in a hurry, perhaps they will ship it to you. Other primers can work, but you run the risk of the paint lifting -- I have had that happen with other paints. Carter and Gruenewald will ship you CIH primer, also. Epoxy will cost you more than you paid for the 2150. Downside of epoxy is that it is usually non-sandable and will not fill scratches, etc, so it is best used on cast, on a smooth surface, or under a surfacer.

If I were to "prime" in epoxy should I also do the cast (motor, frame, and transmission) or just the sheetmetal. Is there any benefits to doing the cast also. I will have to put a surfacer on top of the sheetmetal to get a decent finish on my tin though. I also have to be careful of the "grace" period of how long to apply paint to the epoxy, correct?

P.S. What is a good epoxy to apply under 2150 that does not cost a ton of money?

Put it on the cast and the sheet metal. "Grace Periods" usually range from 3 days to about a week. PPG Omni MP170 must be scuffed and reapplied after 3 days. I haven't bought any lately, the last I bought cost me $78/gallon including hardener, add $10+ to that for the current price. There are probably cheaper brands, but I do not mix products from different manufacturers, although CIH 2150 likely works just fine over MP170. I am a strong believer in primer, regardless of the "fact" that you don't have to use primer when using an alkyd enamel like 2150 (2150 has some acrylic properties).

Any good enamel primer will do. Primer is not really necessary unless it will be a while after metal is preped before painting. Some folks use gray primer so they can tell if they are missing any spots but I use red primer.
