I'm trying to rebuild the governor on my 48 SA. The I&T Shop Manual I have does not show any detail where the speed change lever goes through gov housing. All the parts book shows is a seal and seal retainer on both sides of the housing. When I took it apart there was a seal on the outside only. Shouldn't there be a bushing or sleeve of some kind around in the shaft hole in the housing? The hole is considerably larger than the shaft leaving lots of "wiggle" that the seal will not compensate for. Can anyone help me figure this one out.

thanks,

bjk

BJK, What scott did is fine and should work ok. The bore on mine was worn and like scott stated the shaft gets worn also. I reamed the bore in the housing and then made a new shaft out of stainless steel, made a new lever and brazed it to the new shaft. I used the old spring lever that was there allready. You need to replace the felt seal on the outside counterbore also. Hope this helps.

Actually the housing is worn out and/or the shaft is worn as well. I machined the boss on the housing and pressed in a oilite bush and reamed it to size of the worn shaft (cleaned that up too). Its the only good fix for it. Take it to a machine shop and see how much $ they want to do that, I would be curious. Hope this helps.
