My 886 is not charging the battery. Had the alternator checked and it was OK putting out 15 volts. The gauge is showing the battery voltage and I checked with a VOM same reading. Can some one tell me how the 2 wires leaving the alternator get to the battery. Tried to trace but they are up under the cab.
Thanks

I checked the voltage at the terminals on the alternator and could only read battery voltage. Removed the unit 2nd time and went to a different place to test the unit. The alternator worked again with an output of 15 volts for about 15 seconds then it quit. To make a long story short the unit was intermittent showing good when it was tested at the dealer. Replaced the unit and is working fine now. Thanks for the input and the time . Happy holidays.

Looking at the back of the alternator the terminal on the left, which should be marked R1 is the exciter terminal.
I am not sure where it gets power from but it must be hot at some point to excite the field in the Delcotron alternator to make it charge.
It does`nt have to be contstant because once the alternator is charging the voltage to that terminal can be shut off.
The terminal on the right is the output and should have charging voltage of 13-15 volts.
No juice to the left terminal means no output.
That is what the dash light in older GM and some Ford vehicles did.
If that bulb blew the circut was broke and you could change alternators all day long and they would never charge.

You need the engine to be running at half throttle or better when making this check. Hal

Did you check for voltage at the battery? Place your volt meter leads across the battery terminals. It should read around 14.5 volts. If
you have charging volts here, your battery may be the problem, weak cell. It may have a drain on the battery causing the discharge too. Hal

Check all ground wire conections and make sure they are metal to metal, or the wire itself...

Have you cleaned all the connections at the batterts? also check the condition of the cables. you just have to worry about the big wire comming fron the alt. The alt can be putting out 15 volts but not enough amps the diod trio could have 1 or more bad diods and still show good volts with no load. also could have one bad battery. this has all happened to me on my 886 over the years. hope this might help
