Hello, I have what I believe is a 1939 or early 1940 H. It is a 4 speed. All the gears are worn badly. Does anyone know if I can swap the five speed gears into it? Also I am not sure it is an H because of the 4 speed. Anyone know?

Ok I already have the transmission apart but I do in fact remember that sunken bolt. The only number I can find is cast into the rear 8276 DB. All the gears except the two constant gears are worn badly and some have broken teeth. As far as the steering it has an aftermarket straight hydraulic system. No H steering column...

Update... I found that the 8276 DB is in fact the H transmission casting number. And I figured out that the bolt was preventing me from shifting into 5th. Anyone know where I could get the gears(preferably on the shafts already)?

On the input shaft right behind the gear driving
constant mesh there is teeth that the 4& 5 sliding gear locks on when its slid forward. That locks the shafts together for 5 th speed.

If the IH trans. and you have a 4th all the parts are already in it for 5th.On the top cover
in front of the gear shift lever look for a sunken
hole with a 3/8 bolt.Remove it and put in a shorter one.Warning it may be covered with something, tank support ETC.If you're going to remove to replace gears it should be easy to locate then. Some of the early gears are little different than later gears but if you get a complete set from another tractor they will work
okay.

Well this is not an easy case because the previous owner modified it with a truck front end, an industrial loader and a cab. Basically the only farmall left is the engine, transmission and rear end. It is diffently an H engine. And the transmission gearing looks identical to the breakdown at the dealer. It is even cast into the cover R-1-2-3-4. The dealer thinks it maybe an industrial model built with the H engine. The serial tag is covered by the hydraulic tank but I will see if I can get it. When I try to shift into what would be 5th nothing happens, no grinding or anything. That shift fork rail only moves for 4th gear not fifth. And the wheels are definitely H wheels. According to the style PTO it has it would be on of the first 15,000 H's produced... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The shift pattern is like this?

R24
13

Is there a bolt in the top of the deck near the shifter? Remove that bolt and you will get 5th.

Perhaps someone ground the "5" off the transmission deck somewhere along the line so people wouldn't try to shift into a non-existent gear.

How does the steering column run? Horizontal across the top of the engine? That's one hard-to-hide characteristic of a Farmall. An Industrial I4 or Standard W4 would have a steering column running down at a 45 degree angle to a steering box just in front of the operator's platform.

Can you find a serial tag? Are you sure you don't have a C? Where is your throttle?
