Hello again all, I have a question that you all will think is pretty stupid i'm sure, but since this is my first time doing this I trully don't know the answer. I am compltely restoring my first tractor a 1939 f-20, and I just had the clutch rebuilt and I was wondering if I should have the flywheel plained as well. The fellow at the clutch place told me that if it was not groved up that I did not need to, He never saw it and only took my description. but I would hate to go through all the work of putting the motor and clutch back in the tractor only to have the pressure plate that i also had rebuilt wear out quicker than it should becasue i did not do something that I should have done, thank for your advise.

Are you going to be using this tractor frequently for heavy feild work or even antique pulling? If so, by all means go ahead, do it right, and have the flywheel surfaced while you're at this point to avoid any potential premature downtime in the future.

On the other hand, if it's only going to get the limited and light use that alot of "restored" F-20's get(shows, parades, pulling a haywagon occasionally) and the flywheel truly isn't grooved, then feel safe to go ahead and scuff the surface with sandpaper or emery cloth and put it back together. The clutch will probably outlast you.

NO, I wouldn't mess with it. Make sure the flywheel is smooth and clean but they are a bugger to get of and certainly not worth the effort if it is usable as-is.

With a little elbow grease and a 10 ton port-a-power I already have the flywheel off, I took it off when I took the block in to get cleaned and checked.

Shoot, if it's already off then the battle is 3/4 won already.

Sounds like you're a little hesitant to reuse it as-is, so having it done would probably be worth the cost to you in peace of mind alone.

I just want to do the right thing, like I said this is my first complete restoration and I want to do whats right, I am going to keep the tractor, its not going to get hard use, just plowing the garden and maybe a local fair or two a year, I won't be over working her, thats what the 460d is for.

You are correct, now is the time to do it. Take the flywheel to the shop and let the guy look it over, then you will know for sure.

If it is not groved just put in the new clutch and go.
