F20 electric start?

Occasionally I see an electric-start F20 for sale or mentioned on the forum.
Was this a factory option in the later years of production or just an aftermarket add on ?
Anyone got some pictures of such a thing?

Back in the 60's we used an F20 with Farmhand loader for stacking, loading silage, moving snow and a bunch of other farm chores.
Even tho' it usally started on the 2nd or 3rd try, I always thought it'd be nice to have a starter on it.

Hello Gatz,

Here is a picture of the electric start F-20 that is in my collection. I hope the size is not too big. I left it large so you can make out the starter. It is just below the frame rail.

I've only had the tractor for a few years, but when I was looking I was told that electric start was not offered by the factory.

Do not know if some had starter or not but when I was a teenager I put in my summers for several years cultivating with 39 F 20. Some mornings it would not want to start so I would park it on small hill at night. If it did not wanr to crank in morning and no one was around to pull me off with another tractor I would go to barn harness mule and pull it down hill. When it started would stop mule with brakes (it had 2 foot brakes) worked every time.

guy fay has researched this topic and has never found any proof that a starter was offered from the factory for f-20's.

Lights and a starter were available from the factory. There was a special bellhousing involved. Factory units are pretty rare. There were also aftermarket units, but I'm not sure about how they were set up. I think that there has been discussion about this before. A search of the archieves should turn up something.

I was thinking that some of the 1939 models came with electric start from the factory.I don't think it was available on any of the other model years. John.

John, I think you are correct, I have heard of '39 F-20s with factory starter and lights.

Ditto what Randy said. There were NO IHC factory electric starter kits for F-20s. There are none listed in any parts books, nor are there any IHC casting numbers or IHC symbol on any of the elctric starter units that you will see. All of you know that IHC was very good at putting some type of part number on their part, or at the very least the IHC symbol, so to not have a part number on an electric starting unit including the massive bellhousing seems pretty clear to me that IHC did not make this part. For the record Heisler lists these parts in their catalogs of the era. All these kits you see on F-20s are 99.9% Heisler. As for factory lights, IHC did offer these using the no battery generator that was in-line with the magneto. These are very rare but occasionally you see them. This is listed in the parts books.
