Hi all, Merry Xmas. I have a 584 and it seems to be starting slow, almost dragging. The battery is good, and least when I put the charger on it, she goes green real fast. I have put a volt tester on it and started the tractor and she drops from 12 to maybe 10. The tractor starts but turns over many times and then starts, and smookes from the extra deisel. This has been going on even during the summer. I dont' know if the starter is dragging or the battery is fooling me. I am about to get new battery. I think it was new last year, but it might have been the year before, can't say, when I did put a new on in it. Well, appreciate any feed back, thanks.

John I had the exact same thing happen a few years back on my 584, thought it was the battery, bought a new battery and when it didn't go I thought I had a dud battery , took it back to the dealer who tested the battery and told me the battery was fine, he said it was in the soleniod that is bolted to the starter, I think two bolts, he gave me a new one and told me to go put it on..haven't had any problem since. The starter had got slow and then wouldn't start, just as if the battery was dead..that's all it was, not a costly repair either...Mike in exeter Ontario

John, went through this myself. If it is a Lucas starter you may never get it right. On the bright there is a Delco that fits and it will spin. Did this on my 385.

Take the starter off and take it to a starter alt. repair shop and let them test it. Most auto parts stores have a tester also. Ask around and take it to a reliable shop, and have it rebuilt if needed. I have always had better luck having the shop rebuild it, instead of buying a rebuilt at the auto parts store.

I would use a starter current tester on the tractor.
They are cheap from auto parts stores.
They are placed up against a main battery wire (no connection to, or disassembly of, tractor required).
The meter detects the current flowing in the wire and gives a reading in hundreds of amps.
I would guess that your tractor would draw about 350 450 amps when cranking. if the needle (on the tester) goes beyond 600 amps, I would suspect starter drag. Large diameter copper, short length cables are very important.
Gassers should run 350-450 6v and 275-350 12v
Good luck,JimN
