I bought a INT. 444 that doesn't have live pto.
This was supposed to be standard on all 444's,it was operated by the clutch pedal.Pushing the pedal
half way would only stop the tractor and not the pto.Pushing the pedal all the way down would stop both the tractor and pto.My pedal goes all the way down without any hesitation. Also, the 3-point
hitch has "hiccups". Thanks in advance for any help.

It was possible to special order both the British 444 and American 444 without live 2 stage clutch PTO. They are however exceedingly rare. What is more likely is that you might have a transmission and/or clutch out of an 2444 or 3414, or 3444 industrial loader tractor that didn't have a PTO or just had transmission PTO. What is most likely is that someone had a clutch problem and replaced it with a single stage one. The dual stage clutch is expensive to replace. Note the old B250 did not have live PTO and there were some B275's with transmission driven PTO also

The 444 I referred to had a live PTO -- that I am sure of. Since it was used rather hard on a rototiller before I began to use it, I suppose that if it originally had a 2-stage clutch, it could have been replaced with a single stage one. Never thought of that. Our mechanic (and his boss) liked to save money. I doubt if the 444 ever had a transmission driven pto -- but I can't prove it, it was a 1969 model and the only one I ever paid any attention to. I imagine the 2444 was used by some highway depts for mowing -- I would think a live pto would be a requirement for that.

I can't help you with the clutch set-up, but I just went through the lift on my 354 that was hiccupping. It would drop the hitch to the ground in a minute if the tractor was off. I found an IH Blue Ribbon manual on Ebay for the 414 and 424 hydraulics and found them to be just like mine. Your 444 should be the same. Using the manual I resealed mine and now it is rock solid. It's not a bad job once you get started. The seal on my piston looked perfect on the outside, but had a chunk out of it on the side next to the piston groove.

Kenny: First question, Where are you located? You and CNKS are talking about two different tractors, I think. If you have one of the British assembled 444 brought into Canada then you have a two stage clutch. CNKS would be talking about a Louisvlle assembled 444 tractor using some British and some US components. It sounds like he is describing a completely Independant PTO. I knew the front ends and electrical were different. It sounds as though PTO was different as well.

Only thing I used the pto for was spraying. Quickly found out that when I stopped the tractor, the pto kept running, meaning that instead of 2 or 3 lbs, I was putting 500 lbs/A of some herbicide in the same place. Had to remember to shut off pto or valve to boom. I do not know if it was supposed to have a 2-stage clutch or not.

Having used a 444 it does have live pto, meaning that you can stop the tractor without stopping the pto. Don't know about the halfway thing. The one I used did not stop the pto with the clutch in either. But it is easy to disengage/engage with the lever, much more so than the old "dead" ptos.
