A friend called me up the other day and told me that he knew of a M that was going to go for scrap so I went and looked at it and decided to buy it(give $500 for it). It is a early 1940 with the dip under the seat like the 1939 M had.The moter has a nocking noise and when you pull it on the mixer mill blow-by comes out EVERYWERE, Is it a craked piston or broken ring causing this or what sure is scary to listen to like this. I would like to restore this tractor to original for an FFA progect for this is my last year of high school. Would this tractor have had the same style seat that the 1939 M had? Last year Bought a 1948 M and been working on that and just got hooked on the darn Things. Thanks for any help.

My M parts catalog shows the early seat used on tractors FBK 501 thru 9286. Guy Fays Tractor Data Book show that 1940 Farmall M production started with s/n 7240. That would indicate they were used for the first few months of 1940. If it's the correct seat for your tractor (and probably is) you could verify by checking some casting codes. The code letter for 1940 is a "J" and 1939 it was an "I". Hope this helps. Hal

Mcred, most of your questions have been answered by the following posts, however, you asked if your tractor would take the same seat as the 39 model, since yours has the channeled platform. The answer would be yes. If you want to be as original cosmeticaly a 39 seat is in order, however, expect to pay a lot more money than you would ordinarily pay for a later model factory seat, since they are rare indeed.

Sounds like it sure needs an overhaul. Best tear it down before you do more dammage. But be prepared to have deep pockets. Let me know if I can help in any way.

That sounds like a broken piston ring from all that blowby. It may have worn a groove into the sleeve if it sounds like compression is blowing into the crankcase. Hal

Mcred, do you have any idea when Farmall ceased making/using the dropped casting under the seat? It is my understanding that all H's and M's with that are 39's. Your '40 M must be a pretty rare bird! I have no mechanical knowledge to share about your problems, but wish you luck!

The grooved top platform was typical of all '39s as you say but it was continued into 1940 at least for awhile. I don't know when the change was made, but my 1940 M with month of June casting codes does not have the groove top platform.
