Got her running today. Took a wile before I had it properly warmed up before the kids could ride it :-)
This is the 3rd time I have owned this particular SpitFire. A friend and I just seem to keep selling it to each other over and over.
This ones a 1978. Fun little sled.
So I guess I will own a John Deere or 2 just not tractors.

That reminds me that I have an old Liquifire in the garage covered up with a tarp. I think it's an 80 model. About twelve years ago a bunch of us farm boys loaded up our old JD sleds and took them to Rhinelander for a week. What memories! Trouble was, we spent as much time working on them as we did riding. The locals would ride by on their new Polaris and Artic Cats and just shake their heads in disbelief. Oh to be young and that carefree again!!

I remember fixing the old sleds every night after school for a week so that *hopefully* we could ride most of the day on Saturday. One thing was for sure, didn't matter if you were 1 mile or 10 miles away from home, as soon as you turned around to go back they died.

Best thing to do is sell all the sleds and buy a 4x4 four-wheeler. Which is what my brother did this year, bought an 05 Arctic Cat 500 liquid cooled 4x4, at least for the $$ it's useful all year long.

Thats why my old sleds stay in the yard :-)
Seems they run just fine as long as I am with in walking distance of the house, but as soon as I turn along the ditch to the trail....
it was kind of funny I had her on the trail going as fast as I could. Thought I was screaming along. No one else to be seen. Then all of a sudden 2 Cats came from a 1/4 section away and ripped past me like I was walking.
I thought man that would be fun. Then I remembered. New Cats cost about 5 or 6 grand. Mine is fast enough for $150

I had a 78 Spitfire for a while back in the day (high school). It was a fun little machine! Paid $400 for it and drove it about 3 winters before the track ripped. They wanted $600 for a new track! Brother found one with the engine blown for $200, we swapped engines and traded for an Arctic Cat.

We actually had 7 snowmobiles at one time when I was in high school. Only 5 people in the family, but man did we have fun with friends on the weekends. They were all 70's models we picked up for under $300 and fixed up... Still have a bunch of them, but just as collectables now. For riding my bro has a 92 Arctic Cat Prowler 440 liquid and I have a 96 Panther 440 2-up. No snow the last couple of winters though... in ND or AZ, LOL.

I am on a hunt for another old sled. Passed on another Spit fire the other day. Guy wanted $500.
Like to find a JD LiqidFire 440 or some thing like that.
I guess I just like the old ones.

I had a JD 800 that had a CCW 440 engine in it, slightly modified, and that thing would scream! Was always fun to go flying across the fields at 75 mph... Something about that CCW just seemed snappier than other 440s I've rode, maybe it was the fact that it was reed valve induction instead of port? Dunno.
