Thats called a steering arm. Older tractors had a
vertical shaft in the gearbox that was square on
the bottom end and the steering arm went on that.
Not a good Idea. I once shimmed one with pieces of a tin can till it was tite. Don't know how long it
lasted. My 1949 started out with a square end, but
I was lucky enough to find and elderly parts man
who knew that IH once made a kit to change to the tapered shaft. Not available as a kit anymore ,but
the individual parts are. You need to convert to
the new style with the end of the vertical shaft
tapered. You get a new vertical shaft, and a new
steering arm,and a nut to hold the arm to the shaft. Your sector gear on the vertical shaft is
probrobly sloppy to needs a new key in the shaft. You need to know what tierod ends are used, in ordered to get the right steering arm. The ones like a car , or the ones IH used on early tractors If you allready have the tapered shaft,You need to replace the key in the sector gear, bearings
and seals in the steering box housing. Questions?
E-mail me .

The arm on the steering gear is keyed to the gear's output shaft.

The woodruff keys, and the keyways all wear, making for a lot of play.

Here's a link to some parts book pages at the Cub Collector's site:

That link can be tightened on the out-put shaft and the end that goes to the tie-rods has a slotted plug when you remove the cotter-pin that can be tightened to remove excess play. The ball shaped ends on the tie-rods mite be worn egg-shaped but the can be re-shaped with a disc-sander. You didnt know the year of the tractor but later ones had a tapered out-put shaft on the steering sector witha half-moon key and early ones the shaft was squared and held on with a bolt. You will have to see which one you have. Both types also have a key on a gear in the steering sector which mite be a source of your play.
