Well I got the skip out ok but still have a loud tapping sound at idle and high revolution.
I have already checked the pushrods and lifters and re-checked the valve lash. It's not a rod knocking.
The sound seems to be coming from the govenor. I thought at first it sounded like it was coming from the magneto. The loudest sound comes from the govenor housing and I can't understand how the govenor could be making the noise.
On the opposite side of the engine it is not even noticeble but on the mag side and standing in front of the tractor it is very loud.
It sounds just like a lifter but that has been ruled out. The tapping is solid, constant and continous.
Got any clues???
Thanks,
Rex

Rex: If you have an old round handle from a broom, etc. Cut it square on both ends, put one end to your ear and other end on the various suspect parts of tractor. You will soon pin point within couple inches where the noise is.

I call this the poor mans stethascope. There is a truck shop near here that use just that, a stethascope to find pesky little noises.

Could be a loose or damaged gear on the hydraulic pump if it has one. Does the sound change when you move the touch control arms?

Have you checked to know that you are getting oil to the valve rocker arm shaft?? I had this on one of my tractors. Took valve cover off and it did not look like much oil was flowing. The oil gets up there via a hole drilled in the center stud that holds the rocker arm assembly. Make sure that is open and not blocked by being in the wrong position. I took apart and reassembled and the oil flow increased a lot. Also found some crud in the lifter area at no 4 cylinder push rods where it sounded the noise was. You can see down in there with a good light. I cleaned and flushed that out and then blew it out with compressed air. I don't know which action solved the problem, but the noise is gone.

Rex, check to see if your front crank pulley is loose.

Sometimes a mechanic's stethoscope is useful to pinpoint noises and are cheap.

A cardboard paper towel tube (or rubber hose, for that matter) held up to your ear and a finger in the other ear can do a good job of isolating a noise when the open end is passed around toward the engine.

I would pull the cover off the Govener and see if one of the weights has fallen off or a broken pin or something that holds them in place. If it is that get a used weights or the whole unit. I checked how much one weight would be and its NUTS. Good Luck Andrew
