I'm new to the area of restoring tractors, so my questions may sound trivial. I just got done getting a 1938 F-20 running again, and I had a couple of things that I was wondering about. First, what weight oil should I run in the oil bath air filter? I have heard 30 wt, but also had heard it was critical to get it right, so I ask. Second, I am having a little difficulty with my magneto. It seems to be grounding out when the spark advance lever is in the "run" position all the way down. Mine is set up that up is off, and down is run. This corresponds to a clockwise rotation of the cup on the mag for run. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

My dad got his F-20 in 1950 when I was just 9 years old. I do remember that the magneto lever was up when the tractor was running. A few years later the tractor went to the International dealer in town for some needed repair and when the tractor returned home the lever needed to be put in the lower position to run. As I have read the manual book for the F-20 it does indicate that the lever should be in the lower position to run.

Mike,
The spark advance lever on my F20 works just as yours. Several people have told me that it's backwards, The lever in the down position should be retard spark, and up should be advance. If they are right, then it should ground out when the lever is in the full down (clockwise) position. Mine starts and runs good as is, so I haven't explored it in more detail to see if there is another way to hook it up. With the controls set up on mine, it will not ground out at full retard, so I just turn the fuel off.

Thanks, Nebraska Cowman. That's the way mine is. Wish I had that illustration when we were having the discussion about which way was right. I still need to figure out my grounding circuit.

The grounding peg is on the inside of the breaker housing. I suppose something could be worn alowing the housing to rotate too far and ground on the backside. If it runs allright I wouldn't worry about it, just don't put the lever down too far. You want to advance it juast so it runs the best. Then remember to retard it some when starting.

F20 aircleaner oil? 30wt summer, could use 10-30 winter, basicly use same as engine oil. Clean the screen good, you should disassemble to get out old mud, hope you don't get a 1/2 coffe can full like I did. Mag? point set .013-.015, mag safety gap is supposed to be about 1/4 inch, lever movement reduces to less than point gap- grounds out to shut off, 2 ground position not right. Check lever linkage, does mag mount end set outward from engine? Check manual if you have one, get a manual if you don't. I got mine from Rice equipment out of Pennsylvania. RN

Thanks, I'm off at college right now, but I'm going home this weekend for Christmas break. Will take a fresh look at it and post back.

Oh, I should add that the cup rotation is as seen from the seat looking forward.
Thanks,
