I need to replace the fan belt on the Farmall H and how to tighten it up after, it don"t have a tension device on it, also I need the lenght or p/n of belt.
I have rebuilt the generator, starter, and new battery cables, when I shut off the engine the amp meter showes a -20amp, with the generator belt off the generator runs like an electric motor. Has anyone had this happen and how to fix?
Thanks, Delbert

Use lots of penetrant if the pulley is stuck.

DO NOT overtighten the belts. Just enough to make things work, otherwise you may damage the water pump bearings. the water pump is greasable (don't use much) and will last a long time if the belts are not too tight.

I have one tractor that's been used every week for twenty years and the water pump is still OK.

Actually the H does have a tensioning device, but it"s not what
you"d think. The pulley on the fan is threaded. There is a set
screw that holds it in place. Loosen that and the front half of the
sheeve will unscrew toward the fan, allowing you to get the old
belt off, new belt on. Sometimes you have to tap it with a punch
on the flat spots on the hub to get it to move. Then tighten it by
screwing the sheeves together, making the belt ride higher on
the pulley. You never get it really tight like in a car, etc., but
that"s okay.
It sounds to me like your regulator is stuck, causing the
generator to motor. When the engine is shut down, the contacts
in the regulator should open.

You have the generator wired wrong that is why it is running like an electric motor. (I think you have the battery wire connected to the field terminal instead of the BAT but I’m not positive.)

The fan belt is tightened by screwing the front half of the water pump (fan) pulley towards the rear one. This will cause the belt to ride further out on the pulley, tightening the belt. There is a set screw in the front of the pulley that must be loosened first. Then lots of oil and lots of patience are needed because the pulley is cast iron and probably rusted into place. I like to use an air hammer gently on it to try to free it and get the rust worked out of the threads. Others here will use a drift (punch) and hammer to accomplish the same thing.

Well lets start with the belt. On the pulley for the fan you should see slots those slots are part of the way you tighten/loosen the belt. There should also be a set screw and lock nut on that set screw. Loosen the set screw and lock nut and turn the fan hub to loosen the belt and the to tighten you do that just the other way. May take some tapping and a punch to do so. As far as your genny its just telling you that is works. A genny will turn over like a motor if theres no belt on it and on some tactros thats effect is used as a starter also.
