I have just bought a used tractor and have had several issues with the tractor. It leaked every fluid that is held. after that the entire fron end need all bushings replaced. the wire harness's have been cut and none work. it was starting with the key but it stopped and now I have to jump the starter. the main problem is that it does not want to start, even on 60 degree days. it will take several shots of ether to get it going and continue to run. it has 3300 hours on it and I am looking for suggestions as it seems under powered. whoever had the tractor did not take care of it and I am trying to breath a little life back into it. any help would be appreciated as to why it does not start easily. all filters and fluids have been changed throughout. I had the coolant flushed when I recored the radiator. the international 2001 loader on it works well but when the joystick is turned where it tries to dump the tractor will about stall out as if the pump is overloaded, but only when it is trying to dump. if you are willing to give advice please respond or e-mail. thanks in advance.

Hi Scott, a 674D has a German D239 direct start Diesel engine and there are no glow plugs but there is a setting on the Stop/Start/Run lever that is the start position and it works like a choke on a gasoline engine. There should be a decal beside the Stop/Start/Run lever with the Start position marked but it is probably been worn off a long time ago. The Start position is about 1/4 of the way to the Run position. You can check this with the tractor SHUT OFF, look at the side of the injection pump at the front left of the engine block, you will see a lever connected to the control cable from the Stop/Start/Run lever. When the lever is in the RUN position the lever on the side of the injection pump must limit on the adjustment screw on the bottom front of the injection pump. In the Stop position the lever must fully depress the plumger on the adjustment screw at the top rear of the injection pump. The Start position is where the plunger is fully extended on the Stop adjustement screw.
Starting procedures:
1)Open throttle about 1/4.
2)Put Stop/Start/Run lever in Start position.
3)Depress clutch.
4)Turn Start switch, if engine does not start after about in 15 seconds give a small shot of ether. DO NOT USE to much ether or engine will lockup.
5)Once engine has started let it run on the Start position for 1 or 2 minutes then move to the Run position.
With a good battery and winter Diesel fuel the 674 should start to 32F without ether and to about 10F with ether and colder than 10F requires a recirculating heater.
If the 674 is always hard to start, I would suspect the injection pump is timed to slow. The sympton is in warm weather the engine requires several revolutions to start and white smoke blows out the exhuast.

Re Start switch not working, I can't remember if the 674 has a clutch safety switch. These safety switches were always troublesome. If present it is mounted so the arm on the clutch pedal makes cotact with the switch. When the clutch is depressed the switch is supposed to close and allow the power to be applied to the starter.

Re hydraulic problems with bucket dumping, I would suspect a restriction in a hydraulic line(squashed steel hydraulic line) or the control valves are not connected properly.

Hope this helps

Scott, did you check and clean the air filter?

is there anyway that I can check the engine to know if it needs an overhaul? (without tearing it apart) I have a 7ft pull type brush hog and have hilly land, the tractor can barely make it up the hill mowing dead weeds in 4th low. maybe that is too high of a gear and I am expecting too much. It does smoke some at start up, enough smoke and fumes that it makes your eyes burn in the building (24x32). thanks again

I have not replaced the air filter yet because it looked clean. I can pick one up and see it it makes a difference. I had no idea about the start position and will try that. I have added a amsoil diesel fuel treatment, is that the same as winter diesel? I will check the clutch switch, have not got around to checking the actual switch out as the building is not heated and the temps are not getting into 30's yet. thanks for the help, finding people that have worked on these and willing to respond is a huge help. any idea on where to get a manual for the international loader?

Welcome to this forum.
Working on the starting issue. If the wiring is scrap, the glow plugs are not working. This will be a root cause of the grief. Buy a manual (original, or reprint. This site, and Binder Books do it).
Wire things up correctly before they are dammaged any further. Use color coded wire of the correct gage, and terminal ends. Use 1 ga wire on the battery cables.
The hydraulic may have a improper connection to the cylinder causing the non-function.
Just my input JimN

I have only found 1 place that has wiring harnesses for the 674. anyone have a website they want to share? the one that I found only had two sections and they match factory and are 1/2 the price! I thought the that the diesel only had the water heater and not glow plugs. I do have the manual and will have to read up on it again. thanks
