I RECENTLY REPLACED BATTERY CABLES ON MY 52 CUB WITH 1 GAUGE TO STARTER SWITCH AND FLAT WOVEN STRAP CABLE FOR POSITIVE GROUND ONTO BOLT UNDERNEATH SEAT. CHARGED 6-VOLT BATTERY AND CONNECTED NEGATIVE CABLE FIRST THEN POSIITVE GROUND (OR TRIED). WHEN I TRIED TO ATTACH POSITIVE CABLE TO + BATTERY POST IT MADE A LOT OF SPARKS. IS THIS DUE TO OVERVHARGING OF BATT., BAD REGULATOR, SHORTING OUT SOMEWHERE? ANY WORDS OF WISDOM WOULD BE APPRECIATED. TRACTOR STARTED AND RAN FINE BEFORE I STARTED TINKERING AND TRYING TO REPLACE BADLY FRAYED CABLES. THANKS.

Gene Bender & Dixieland: Thanks for the advice. I think I'll start with replacing starter switch, which I took off to clean and was missing some of the paper washer. Then I'll go with removing or unbolting starter. Have a great day!

NO overcharging will not cause that nor will a bad reg. Are you sure your starter button isnt stuck and also the starter locked on the ring gear. I would remove starter and check it.

Gene I put a new starter switch in, rocked tractor in 3rd gear, unbolted starter and jiggled, etc. Still no cranking it. Could it be a bad igniton switch, coil, etc? should i proceed with re-wiring completely? would the volatge regulator be the problem. I think original is still on tractor although it started fine before I started tinkering with something as simple as repalcing the cables. Thanks for your help!

Hi Rangel, It sounds like the insulator on the starter button is shorted but click here for some more information.

Good Luck,
Rex

You can't post links to other websites. I'm not sure why it's not allowed, just that it's not allowed.
