Re: MD,SMD,SMTAD in reply to fryed, 12-09-2005 17:55:37 I may get bashed for this, but there is a guy that lives near me that has an H and it runs on diesel. I dont know if he made it this way, or if it was an aftermarket kit, but the distributor has been replaced with a pump that has the lines running to injectors that replaced the spark plugs. He very seldom uses it anymore, and Ive been after him to sell it, but he wont budge. He once said his father bought it that way at a dealership, but it wasnt an IH dealership.Next time Im over that way Ill snap a pic or two.

I just want to know if anyone else has heard of such a thing?

Check to see if it says "Shephard" on the block or oil pan somewhere. Shepard did alot of diesel conversions, I know I've seen an M with one not sure about an H.

It's simply a diesel engine of some sort installed into an H -- likely not the first time. But, I really doubt if it is a C 152 converted to diesel -- that engine is simply not strong enough. It would be interesting to see how long it would run like that before it grenades.

Is it possible that the original engine has been replaced with the diesel engine from a Farmall 350?

That cannot be an H unless it has been changed since it left the factory. They never built a H diesel. This is a fine example of how wild tales get started. The present owner doesent know what he has as there were no H diesels ever left the factory cause they didnt build any.

I think what he is saying is that the original H block was converted to diesel. Sounds like a standard "need for more hp" idea from back in the days before diesels took off. And yes, I would love to know how long till the "HD" lasts.

EXACTLY! I dont know how long the engine will last, or how old it is now. I know it doesnt get used much, and when it does it usually pulls a hay rake, at least the few times Ive seen it out.

I had some big drawn out responce to that wild tales deal, but you know what, forget it! I know its an H,I never claimed it was factory,in fact I said aftermarket. And as I said, next chance I get I will go over and take pics of this setup. If noone believes me fine,I really dont care!

Don't get too upset, John. The crotchety old fart just comes out in some people when you show them something new.

gene bender, open your mind a little. A "low compression" diesel H isn't out of the realm of possibility. With the right machine tools and a little creativity, it can be done. An MD has the same bottom end as a gas M, so why couldn't the same thing be done to an H?

"An MD has the same bottom end as a gas M, so why couldn't the same thing be done to an H?"

Nat - Actually only the external dimensions of the M and MD block are the same. Internally they are very different (the MD has a heavier, 5 bearing crank in vs. a 3 bearing crank in the M, etc)

Regarding the H "factory diesel", most likely someone took a Continental diesel from a 350D and stuck it in an H. It would be a relatively straightforward engine swap.

Not out of the realm of possibility, but it is out there near the edge. Custom pistons, cam, pump drive, rods, and head just for starters. It would be wildly expensive and quite unreliable. If the owner bought, for example, a $1000 tractor that had $15000 worth of modifications to the engine that make it nearly useless in an ag application, I bet he would be able to recall the details a little more vividly. The safe bet is a Continental out of a 350.
