Small imported alternator...one wire?

Recently discussed alternators off small cars as cheap as $45 or so sound great for some of the cramped installations like on a Cub. BUT! what about a regulator? Do any of them (or all of them) have built in regulators like the so-called Delco one wire that's so cool? I don't need anymore junk strapped to my engine that can't be made to function by man or beast.

R-Cubed, I am glad you brought this up, I did a lot of research on the pros and cons of the Delco 10SI and it"s one-wire variant. As mentioned, it does have some limitations because of the lower rpm of the farm tractors. I got around that by using a smaller alt pulley. The one wire regulator I got off ebay, BTW. It worked fine, on the other hand, in the smaller space required for an M, I planned on using a Mitsubishi that I had laying around but the terminals are marked differently than the Delco or Hitachi. There is a good Hitachi article on this site and maybe Keith will come back with some wiring info and help out on the Mitsubishi.

Tom, I will post info tomorrow. need to go out to shop and get pictures and wiring info .....

John, on a Cub they have to use the smaller alternator , as there is not enough room for the Delco under the hood....

The Delco 10SI will fit under the Cub hood without interfering with anything. I did it on my 1960 Cub and have seen two others that were converted. The space is tight. My third mounting bracket design was the one that worked. The belt tensioning bracket was difficult to design and make. But it works well. The very last Cubs, made in the later 1970's, had the Delco 10SI as standard equipment. Those were the "square" hood Cubs.

R, The Delco you hear so much about (10S1) is actually a 3 wire unit, but it is internally regulated. While a true ONE wire is easier to install, some require a higher RPM before they kick in and can cause a teeny trickle discharge on the battery (could use a diode if neecessary). Most all require Negative ground which means you may have to do some easy re configuring for Negative ground if youre at positive now. The smaller one wire (may be foreign) units fit under some hoods a lot easier then the Delco 10SI

I have a Mitsubishi #A1T23377 w/built in regulator on my 1948 Cub lots of room under hood. Really simple to mount. I did not have generator, regulator or mount bracket for my cub when I got it, had to make alternator bracket. If you would like I can post picture of alternator and bracket tomorrow...HTH

Most of them from about 1985 and newer have the regs built in to them. You will still need to use 3 wires like on a delco but its not all that hard to wire up. I did a cub last summer and a 450 also. I just took them to an auto parts store and had them checked and wrote down how they had to be hooked up.

The Hitachi alternator I have on the "H" has an internal regulator. It uses two wires ,one to bat or ammeter and the other to ign. 75 amps and is no bigger than your fist.

Do you have the complete part number for that Hitachi? most of the alternator conversions that I have done utilized a 10SI Delco, but IH tractors have little room under the hood, and I am looking for a reasonably priced alternator that will fit under there.

Thanks in advance. Bud
