I have a new toy or should I say money pit, I just put my hands on a 1939 farmall f-14.
I have it torn down completely and plan to restore it to its original condition. The motor is stuck but she has a apointment with the motor doctor so it will be done by a pro.
I do have a problem though, The serial number is fs14288 and is shown to be a f-14 but the model number on the plate says its a f-12???
The steering column is raised like the 14
What gives?

Besides having the steering wheel raised, the F-14 also had longer brake handles and the clutch pedel was a little diffenet.

There is a difference in gears on the F12 and F14 because of engine speed

I am not that familiar with either model, mostly just what I have read. I imagine that someone has changed the steering column on your tractor. F14's begin with serial 124000. 14288 would be a 1934 F12.

The oil breather is on the right side, isn"t that the way it is on the 14?
Maybe the engine was changed?

Look on the fuel pump side of the engine just above the fuel pump. There is a flat surface with the serail number stamped on it.If it matches your serial number plate, then its the original engine and some more investigating need to be done.If it doesnt match, then its a different engine. Its possible that the 12 to 14 upgrade kit was installed, but the serail number plate wasnt changed. Are the brake handles short or long?

It has long brake handles and the serial numbers match, is there a number on the trans case?
How can I tell if a 14 conversion has been done?
It will be wierd to tell people that I have a 12 when it looks like a 14. The steering wheel is raised and the oil vent is on the right side.
It looks like I have a 1934 engine with a F-14 tappet cover?

Frm what I can remember, the steering componets from front to back, the seat post, brake levers, and a new serail number tag were part of the kit. I am also wanting to say new decals, but I may have that mixed up wih something else.I dont remember if the valve cover was included, since I hole would have to be drilled and tapped in the block for the bolt on the tube. Governor adjustments were made as well. Its highly possible that yours has the kit and they didnt waste time on the serail number plate, orsomeone wanted a 14 and made one. That would be my guess.Id leave it and let the correct police fight about it!

The 14 and 12 use the same basic engine. The governor is speeded up on the 14 is all. The steering column is raised on a 14 but many raised the columns on their 12. They can be dificult to tell the two tractors apart.
