Hello, I was wondering if anyone had a possible improvement over the stock battery setup on a 1466. Batteries are only 4 years old and are dead already. Was wondering if the long skinny 12 volt type hooked in parralell would last longer than the two 6 volts hooked in series. Thanks for your thoughts on this. YC

stick with the 6 volt batteries, model 3EH they have more cranking amps than the 12 volt version.

My two cent's - I didn't notice anyone mention the most important item - fluid level . And use nothing but distilled water . Keep them full enough to have a dimple as you look in . Some have told me that just keeping the plates covered is ok , it's NOT . Just like keeping the bare minimum of oil in an engine , not a good idea . Batteries get hot when in use in the summer , especially at night with the lights on . The other thing I like to do is use welding cable for my battery cables . Tougher insulation , more flexable and less resistance due to finer wire but more expensive . Don't ever go smaller than 1 gauge , 1 ought or 2 ought is better . Don't know if I spelled that right but you get what I mean . Still use solder on ends and be careful if you've never done it . The first time I did it the solder exploded into my face . I wear glasses so none got in my eyes but it still hurt . Don't know why , might have had some moisture in the cable or something . I don't think there can be overkill when it comes to battery cables . Lot's of amps being pushed through those thing's the instant you hit the button . If you've ever seen a cable jump that's undersized you know what I mean . Take care ...Randy

Thank you all for the advice. I thought of Walmart as well. Their batteries seem a good buy and do have a good warranty. Would have to widen the battery holder. Will check cables. Did replace an end on one. I will go ahead and replace the whole cable. You all have a fine Christmas and thanks again. YC

Don't use those crimp on ends, its better to solder them. Hal

One other item I should have said, when my Deere was about 12 years old with a pair of 5 year old 12 volt batteries in parallel, about Christmas time I noticed it little sluggish on cranking. I installed all new factory original cables. Two years and 3 month later the batteries gave up. Went there one morning in March and it was dead, as it was every morning from then on until I installed new batteries. The old batteries would start the Deere all day, but wouldn't hold over night. Just shows you what good cables can do. Close to 30% added to the life of those batteries. By the way that Deere was run daily all winter.

Yellot Canby: It doesn't matter whether you go 2-6 volt in series or 2-12 parallel as long as you get the required cranking capacity. You can come up with that capacity either way. Shape of the battery doesn't affect it either as long as you have that capacity. I farmed in an area where we quite regularly got -20F in winter, had 4 - 6 cylinder diesels all with dual batteries, always got 5 plus years out of batteries. Some of my tractors had 2-6 volt in series, while some had 2-12 volt parallel, couldn't see any difference. The factory instalation in my 1066 went 8 years and that tractor was rarely ever started in winter.

In my opinion, good maintainence, items like clean terminals, good cables and regular use only adds to the life of a battery. I never let a vehicle of any kind go more than 30 days without starting and a good warm up, doesn't matter whether it be tractor, truck or car. I will say this, if for example my 1066 had not been going for 20 plus days, I would pick a mild day for that warm up. Some folks recommend trickle charge, but in my opinion the whole tractor needs the warm up.

One thing I will recommend is extra capacity over and above what manufacturer calls for, and you can gain that with either system.

I was 1/2 asleep last night. I use the 2 6 volts but do use the 4eh, The 86's use the group 24 12 volts. Just make sure your battery cables are in good shape. Don't use replacable ends. You will lose current.

I use 12 volt batteries from Walmart. They have a 3 year free replacement and are guaranteed 7 years. Batteries need to be used and discharging and then charging will increase the life of a battery. They say taxi cabs have very few problems with batteries since they're used at night and the battery is discharged and then recharged. I think 4 years use from a battery isn't too bad. Hal

Not sure if you have the 6 volts for sure but the 2 12 volts are all I've ever seen in a 10 or 14. The 3eh is common but I make the battery holder wider and fit a 4eh in it.
