I had a problem with the starter on my 450. Pulled it off and many of the teeth on the starter were worn. The fly wheel is ok. I changed the starter out, with a 6 volt today. I put the 12 volt mag switch (solenoid) on the new starter. When I turn the key, the solenoid only buzzes. I have constant voltage on the lead from the solenoid to the Ignition coil. Should i assume the solenoid (aka mag switch depending on which book I look at) is bad ?

Put the 450 in neutral___brakes on, then Jump from one big term to the other on the solenoid,
This will spin the starter directly.
If it turns, (and won't with the key, then you are correct, the solenoid is bad.
If it does not, the battery may be low/bad, causing the symptoms described.
A dead short to ground in the new starer will also cause the symptom, but laee likely.
Please let us know what it is,
jimN

Thanks for the hint, did not even try to run the starter yet.

Full history of this venture.. The last hay cut I baled, the starter was slipping some. I pulled it and saw some teeth gone. Ran it any way to finish the hay while it was dry. Ran the tractor into the barn, and at that point i should of known...

When i turned the key off, the tractor kept running... being in a hurry I just shut down the fuel, thinking I would check it out right away..

WEELLLLL 8 weeks later.. First snow... I put in the replacement starter, while charging the battery, i noticed the ignition coil was getting warm... and here we are. The solenoid was stuck, the battery is dead, can't get it to hold a charge. so .....

Tonight i'll throw a new battery in, try to fire her up and let ya know.
