THE STARTER ON MY SM WAS GETTING WEAK SO I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP AND HAD IT GONE THROUGH. CLEANED, NEW BRUSHES, ETC. WHEN YOU TRY IT ON THE BENCH, IT WORKS GREAT, PUT IT ON THE TRACTOR, AND INSTEAD OF INGAGING , IT ACTS LIKE THERE IS A DEAD SHORT. IF I BYPASS THE STARTER BUTTON AND GO DIRECTLY TO THE BOLT, THE CABLE LIGHTS UP LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE. HELP!!!!!

Any battery cable that "lights up" is bad, or too small. The cables should Be Size 1 or larger (including 12v) I suspect the cable may have been an issue before. Welding cable with 3/8-1/2" of copper is reasonable for that purpose. keep them short in length.

Pull it back off and make sure you have a good clean area where it bolts on to the tractor, also make sure all your cables are clean, tight and brite.

Sounds like maybe the gears are not meshing properly.
