The new aftermarket ones (I think many places sell the same thing for about $75) made in China or some place do have sealed bearings and don't need oil. I got one for my SC. It was defective so sent it back for another. The blade that came with the replacement hit the water pump shaft. I couldn't space it forward to miss the shaft 'cause the spindle mounting bolt was too short and besides the pulleys wouldn't have lined up. I suppose one could have made a spacer to put between the hub and fan blade and got by, but that's a lot of work. I think though, that the aftermarket cheapies might work on a C without water pump. I'd recommend looking for a good used original. They're out there. I found one on eBay.

If I remember right, you can use washers as spacers between the hub and blades to just move the fan forward. Only four bolts hold the fan on -- perhaps there are different manufacturers and mine was different from yours.

Call Steel Wheel Ranch 785-548-7437 and get a new fan assembly with sealed bearings for about $70 including shipping--Mike will get it out to you right away. I have replaced two of those. Don't know that I have ever seen any sparks or heard any noise, they just seized and quit.

Hugh -- The 1st C, I disassmebled the fan and oiled and reassembled according to instructions, as part of my "restoration" process. Finished the tractor, started it for the first time, let it run a while, everything seemed ok, went into the house for 15 minutes--BIG MISTAKE -- came back out, fan had seized, antifreeze all over the place, luckily it had just happened, engine ok -- got one from Steel Wheel Ranch, problem solved. Bought another C last March. Replaced fan belt and put new antifreeze in to get it running -- did not check oil in fan, that was to be done later when I got around working on the tractor. Fan seized while I was standing there. Simply did not want to mess with replacing parts, new, used or otherwise. Simpler just to give the $70 to Mike and be done with it. Not a factory part, but it doesn't bother me. I can see your problem with tariffs, etc -- but I don't have that problem and Steel Wheel Ranch and other suppliers are VERY reliable.

I had the same thing happen with my Super C. Started it for the 1st time after restoration. Went in the house to get the camera and came out to an awful screeching sound. I had serviced and oiled mine also. There was no warning it just froze right up. Got an after market like yours and been running trouble free since then. Ticked me off to have to put a wrench to my new paint job. Oh well.

CNKS: Just looking ahead, I currently have two of these old fans on my SA and 130. How much warning do they give, when going bad? We have a rather unique situation here in Canada, calling Mike is not too bad in itself, but brokerage fees can double the cost of individual small shipments at the border.

We have a couple of good used parts guys that are bringing in volume shipments of aftermarket parts. I hear good and bad about these replacment fans. How does one pick the good from the bad?

I might add also, CaseIH dealers seem to be quite good on parts for older tractors. I tend to hoard parts like this in advance, and since I have two tractors the same, might not be a bad idea to have a fan in the shop. Almost without exception, in this location, CaseIH has been my most economical source.

Hugh, I didn't answer the reliablilty part -- I don't use my tractors enough to wear much of anything out. The fans are simple, nothing but a pulley, housing, sealed bearings and some blades. On the 1st C, I put the original blades on as they were already painted. Far as I can tell they are identical. The second one I bolted on as is, will paint it with the rest of the tractor. Having said that, on my Super H I could NOT get the factory water pump to stop leaking. Varied the amount of packing material (CIH), tightened the nut, still dripped. Probably had it off 3 times. The price of rebuilt ones was prohibitive to me at the time. Mike had a Chinese one drop shipped to me from the importer. Appeared to be virtually identical, except the the shaft may be metric. Have tried both CIH packing and the NAPA graphite coated string -- makes no difference it still leaks, don't use the tractor much, so I gave up -- that one I can't figure out.

It comes as a COMPLETE unit. Take the old one off bolt the new one on. Biggest problem is getting the grille and shroud off. Only the blades on your old one will fit the new, but the new one comes with blades. The bearings are sealed, you don't oil or grease them.
