Thanks Cowman for the advice.
Your method is much easier than what was recommended elsewhere.

Hey harvesterguy, I live in Ravenna and see these machines every year across the street from me. By the way guys, we pick all sorts of things mechanicaly. Blueberries for example are harvested by a machine that straddles the row and beats the berries off the bush. Dave BN

Hey Dave;
You wouldn't happen to live across from the Swanson's? I've been there several times working with John & Dave. I've also developed a good working relationship with Bob & Jerry over at Jerry's Welding. All good guys to work with.

I live on Ellis RD near Sullivan rd. There's a Swanson field across from me (the old Osbeck farm). I use Jerry's welding once in a while, he always does a good job for me. Dave.

Cucumbers have been mechanically harvested on a large scale since about 1970. Currently about 65-70% of the crop is picked with machines and labor pressures are forcing the dwindling handpicked acreages ever smaller. There have been several commerically available harvesters including the Hart-Carter (tractor driven backwards), FMC (self propelled), Blackwelder (same mfg as the tomato pickers), Pik Rite (pull type), Vogel (the new guy on the block) in addition to the Wilde (Raven) machines pictured in the last photos. The Wilde machines are by far the most prevalent designs, but are being phased out by larger, newer, higher capacity machines.

A good estimate would be about 30,000 + acres machine harvested in Michigan, 12,000 + in Missouri, 8,000 in Delaware & Maryland, 2,000 + in North Carolina, and over 10,000 more in Texas, Colorado, Alabama, Wiscosin, and Indiana.

I work quite a bit on pickle harvesting and thought everyone might enjoy seeing some different applications of their Farmalls

I grew Gemini that had all female flowers. Had to
have other varieties for pollination. Bees did a good job doing that. Scads of cukes. Hal

Animal,

Most of the smaller machines built around cubs and 140's have long since gone to the great scrap yard in the sky. I scanned aproximately 300 photos of over 50 different prototype pickle harvesters while working on updating and improving current harvester designs. I believe most were scrapped a year or two after testing as I have never or heard of many of the machines pictured.

Interesting. So are we picking cucumbers? I've never seen machines like these.

Just goes to show how diverse agriculture really is. I've never given a thought as to how a commercial cucumber grower would do the harvest. Thank you for the pics Harvesterguy.
