Bought what I thought was 424 international. Tractor starts and runs good. Everything I find so far says these tractors have eight speed trans. This one has four speed. I think it's in the mid 60's but haven't found any 424 with 4 speed.
Any Ideas

Maybe you have a 404.

Hi-Lo lever could be missing. If it is look for a shaft or hole in the trans housing by your left leg.

I don't want to insult you, but I gotta ask. Does it have hi/lo two speed?
Does it have a data plate with a model number?

There is not a place for the high/low lever. When I look at the pic in my shop manual I can see the lever and cast marks on the housing with L an H cast in place. The housing doesn"t look like the one in the manual. It also shows the gears 1 though 4 an Reverse cast in the housing. This tractors battery box is only a few inches from the shifter and shift pattern is sheet metal tab rivited to box.
Model no. (I think) on the left side of clutch housing has the no. 7418J

That's a serial number. The J means it has a rockford clutch.

Can you post a picture? A 4-speed without hi-lo would indicate to me a variant or descendant of the A/B/C lineage, like a 240 utility. Is the shifter between your legs?

Yes Nat, shifter is between legs. I can't think of anything else that stands out about the tractor. I will take some pics and send them first of the week. This is the first itme I have used this board and I'm not sure where the pics need to go. Do I need your address?

If your battery box is betwen your legs, it's likely a 404, 240 or 504. If the tractor has square rear axle castings, you may have a 504U. If the axle castings are diamond shaped, its a 404 or 240. If the tractor has diamond axle castings and the main engine hood skirts are rippled like a wash board , it's a 240. If the main engine hood skirts are smooth, it's a 404. As I recall, these are the only IH utility tractors with a battery box between your legs that have a 4 cylinder engine after the 300-330. The 504 did have a 5 speed transmission though.

With all that you've told me and going the our local IH dealer I have learned that it's not 424 but 404. Thanks for the replies

I have never seen a 424, I have spend substantial time with it's "replacement" the 444. It is as Tim described -- I'm not sure you have a 424.
