I could use a little assistance with my wiring harness . I just bought a 12 v conversion kit for my 53 S/M and the steps listed in the instructions are a little confeusing. I've also got a wiring diagram but it's not helping. I guess I need it broken down Mr. Potato head style for me. I would appricate any assistance, I need to get this tractor up and running for snow removal.

The others are steering you in the right direction, Bob Ms diagrams are worlds better than any wiring schematic in the manuals.

Bob M's diagram MIGHT help, but it's probably similar, and similarly confusing, to the diagram that came with your kit.

Unfortunately, there's no "universal" way to convert to 12V, and without more information from you, there's absolutely no way to break it down "Mr. Potato Head style" for you. Who's kit did you get? What did it come with?

The basic steps are:
1. Remove 6V battery, 6V light bulbs, voltage regulator and generator.
2. Install alternator, fabricating new bracketry or modifying the existing bracket as necessary.
3. Install 12V light bulbs.
4. Install 12V battery, attaching the - terminal to the tractor frame.
5. Wire it up, which could be a couple different ways depending on the alternator you have.

If you've got a one-wire alternator, you're on easy street. All you need to do is run a wire from the terminal on the alternator back to the battery's + terminal. If you want to do it right, you can run the wire from the alternator to the starter switch, connecting to the main cable that runs back to the battery.

Other connections:
1. Battery + to on/off switch, then on/off switch to the coil. If you want to do it right, you can run the wire from the main battery cable on the stater switch to the on/off switch.
2. Battery + to fuse, then fuse to light switch, then light switch to lights. If you want to do it right, you can run the wire from the battery side of the on/off switch instead of running a separate wire from the battery.
3. Battery + to starter switch, with heavy 2 or 0 gauge cables.

If you need the tractor now, put it back the way it was and use it.

The conv kit I ordered right off this website, Tisco is the only info on the box. What came with it was Bracket, Alt, wiring harness, resistor, I'm having problems with the harness and where to connect into the fuse box ?, I removed old wiring and I don't wan't to burn up the alt by making the wrong connection. The alt is not a one wire alt it's got connections on top for two wires and one in the back. Here's what the inst say ?
A. #10 short red&white wire- AMP meter neg - side to starter switch (battery side)

B. #10 RED WIRE- AMP meter positive + to alternator battery terminal main harness

C. #14 red short wire either term on amp meterto battery on ignition switch.

D. #14 brown wire ignition switch Term marked IGN to coil resistor main harness

E. #14 blue wire - Resistor to coil (battery side + coil Neg to dist.

Seems pretty straightforward to me. Just go step by step. Everything's color coded for you. What is your specific problem with the instructions?

There is a good wiring diagram for a S/M 12 volt conversion at www.albums.photo.epson.com/j/albumlist?u+4001561&f=0
scroll dorn to item # 38 and look at diagram #6
