I'm thinking about replacing the rings and having the head reworked on my worn out IH 424.
Also I'm thinking about converting to power steering since manual steering on this tractor is a killer.
Any suggestions or information on this will be very helpful.
Thanks.

Thanks for the help.
I think I can overhaul without a problem. I'm afraid of rounding some of the exhaust manifold bolts/nuts off. Also having to resleeve this guy.
I believe you would have to break tractor apart to replace crankcase bearings. Is that correct?
Thanks.

You had better check the bearings and measure the crankshaft for wear. Hal

re-ring and valve job will be a straight-forward deal..

for the power steering,I'd recommend trying to find a parts tractor with PS,it's a whole different animal than the non PS equipped 424's..

The process is as follows (details from text books and service manuals left out intentionally)
Get text books on engine overhauls (old)
Get service manual for specific tractor
Use a digital camera to photo everything before during and after taking apart
Place all parts in boxes marked with systems it came from. Protect all sheet metal with blankets.
Make many lists of things needed at the store like new antifreeze hoses and stuff.
Use white cloth tape and a ball point pen to mark all lines and wires
Remove sheet metal as directed
remove intake system At manifold/head(as intact as possible)
Drain oil/h2o
Remove valve cover and oil pan
Remove attachments and sensors on head
Remove head
Remove Pistons
Rework or replace as needed on measurement.
Assemble in reverse order, going from photos and notes.
Have fun do not go nuts or stomp around.
Ask us more questions.
