We have a 450 that we just put new wheels and tires on about a year or two ago. Will the wheels fit the axle on a 560D? Thanks, Wheaty

Early 560s have the same axle as a 450, 2 keyways. The later 560s had 1 keyway.

I have an early 460 serial 15?? (don't remember last 2 digits), rears have one keyway. It appears people better check good before purchasing or changing H-460 and M-560 wheels or axles. I suppose it was cheaper to use one large keyway rather than 2 small ones.

Don't know about 460 but one keyway axles started showing up on some 450 tractors, mostly one keyway on one side and two on other side.I agree with Hugh that it was done to increase strength. Also more cost savings by just machining one.On the subject I always wondered why some axles have a turned down section 3 to 5 inch wide
inside the axle housing between the bearings and some don't. Also wonder when they started the 2 3/4 axle on 300 - 460. 56 model 300 is early as ive seen.

Wasn't very clear about the 2 3/4 axles on 300 - 460. it was optional they still came with 2 1/2. Just wondered when it started being offered.

CNKS: My 560 had one keyway. I purchased a set of SM wheels for duals. All I had to do was change the cast clamps to clamps without key in them. Keyway on other side matched. I know of a situation whereby they ground keys out of clamp.

I'm wondering if two keyways didn't actually weaken the axle. When new our 300 came with wheels dished in but out to end of axle. The first week my dad had the tractor when new it sheared the keys out of one wheel. The dealer fixed this by having a matching keyway cut in wheel, then installed a key to fill both axle and wheel keyway. They never did replace keys on clamp. I urged my dad to change wheels so dished out at the time. I was only 13 at the time and who listens to a 13 year old. IH dealer was right in dad's opinion.

About 10 years later I was moving a building on skids, pulling with both 300 and 560. I put Canadian Ring Chains on 300 for better traction. When we were done I noticed the 300 had close to a 1/4 twist on one axle. While still straight and rigid it was split along bottom of keyways on both sides. I bought a parts tractor that had been in a fire and changed the axle. Changed wheels to dish out also. By the way that wheel with keyway cut in cast and large key to fill both keyways was on the 300 for at least 35 years, probably still there as tractor is still going.

SM wheel might fit a 560, but the keyway in a H/SH wheel is narrower than on a 460, at least it is on mine. Hard to imagine breaking a key on the H. I drove that thing fully loaded in 2nd for many hours -- not abused, just loaded. I suppose pulling dead weight like you did something had to give. What did give one time on our H was the transmission or differential (don't remember which), when pulling a land plane -- for leveling for irrigation. I have never driven one with any load with the wheels dished in. I do have an M with dished in wheels. I don't like them that way, but it has those monstrous cast weights on the inside and outside (not the factory ones). they must weigh 500+ lbs apiece. I have no safe way to remove them.

CNKS: I should have been a bit clearer. When 300 sheared the keys in the wheel, dealer had delivered it with wheel not tight enough. We put a wrench on it right after it happened, turned much too easy.

On twisting the axle, I was driving 300 and we had it hooked ahead of 560. I know the guy on 560 pushed it clutch a few seconds before me at one point, giving 300 the full load plus the 560. I'm not certain, but always felt that is what twisted the axle.

Wheaty: Yes, all M, SM, SMTA, 400, 450, 560, 656, 666 and 686 have the same size axle externally.

Diameters are the same, BUT, although I don't know about the 560, but the 460 wheels and axle have only one keyway on the axle, unlike the H/Super H, do not know whether they changed with the hundred series or 60 series.

The axles on the 300-350 have two keyways. Does the cast wheel use one or both keyways?

M and early SuperM (rims) are different than the rest Hugh mentioned. But axels are the same I wanted wider tires on my SM so I bought used 460 rims and switched cast wheels from a 450. Then put the rims and tires from the SM on our H and threw the h's tires and rims away.
