Friend of mine in the well and backhoe business had his shop burn down 1:00 this morning. He arrived at 1:15 soon enough to roll out JD B,AC WD, MTA, and 77 Oliver all restored in attached building. They did not get out the MD and D21 out of shop part. D21 looks to be OK MD not so good. Fire may have started in newer pickup parked in shop. He said I can replace the pickup and is glad he got out the tractors and no one was hurt. Over twenty firwe trucks form area were there.

I know two people who have had fires in their Fords just in the last year. One is having my builder rebuild his new house cause his new truck was sitting in his big fancy new garage. Lost everything.

I think if I owned one those Ford vehicles that's on the recall list I would install a master switch. This would isolate the battery from ground. It may be a little inconvenient, but I would sleep better. Especially if it's garaged
that's connected to the house. Hal

When I took mine in, they disconnected the cruise control - mine near where the brake fluid reservoir is - wraped electrical tape around it and said "you will get another notice when the parts come in". That was supposed to be November, now they say February according to my dealer.

60 minutes or some similar program had a story about the newer Ford trucks and SUV's.

Here's the general gist of what I remember about it:

Appearantly there is a relay or something in the brake fluid resivior. The relay is part of the cruise control system, ie step on the brakes, this realy clicks, and the cruise switches off.

The example they had was some family in LA or somewhere that had this shiny new Expedition. They parked it in the garage, becasue they were afraid if they left it on the street that it would get stolen. Well, the Expedition caught fire, and burned their garage and house down. Wow.

Anyway, for some reason, Ford designed that relay to have power all the time, as opposed to having power to it just when the ignition swithc is on. Well, there have been problems with the relay going bad, heating up, and starting the brake fluid on fire.

Beautiful example of a boneheaded design.

Since a vehicle needs brake lights, why not use the "brakes applied" signal to kill the cruise control? It worked just fine on my old Corvette, controlled by a switch on the brake pedal arm. Simple, simple, simple, inexpensive, effective, and safe.

Sounds like Ford's engineers have way too much time on their hands.

Yes it was. Why did you guess that. I didn't say that on purpose to see if any one would say anything.

Ford has had problems with ignition switches too.
This dates back into the 70's & 80's. I have an old 81 Mercury Cougar with the 302 engine. I've
never had a problem with it. It only has 52K miles on it.

I did see a show on American Justice where a woman drove a 78 Cougar over an embankment and her mother was a passenger. She tried to get her mother out of the car and it started to burn. She couldn't shut the switch off either. The door was locked and her mother died in the fire.

She was prosecuted for killing her mother & was convicted & served time in prison. Her friends raised enough money to hire an expert and the man hired knew about Ford cars having ignition problems. He inspected that car & found that
this Cougar had the ignition switch that was on Ford's recall list. This car had missed the recall by one year. She was given a new trial & released. This show is rerun by American Justice
several times a year. Hal
PS: If I was the tractor owner I would be looking for a good lawyer.

Ford had a recall because of fires. Some microswitch in the cruisecontrol overheats. I have a 95 that I haven't took in yet that has the recall.
