I have a 424 with a sticky needle valve in the carb. It does not stick every time, but when it does, it dies in about 1 min of running. It has just had a new needle valve put in a year ago (20-30 hours) the gas is fresh, the carb just cleaned, ...etc.Are the valves with rubber tips junk? Or is there a trick I am missing?

Thanks Guys, I tried the tapping trick for the carb and it worked pretty good.

Smack the carb with a big rock enough times, and you'll scare it into working right... I kid you not.

When I got my H, the original needle leaked like a sieve. No hope of recycling that one. Got a new all-brass needle from the local CIH dealer, put it in, ran good. A couple months down the road, it started sticking at odd times, until finally it would only run about a minute. Dad got fed up, took a big rock, and gave the carb a good tap. Ran good, but the needle stuck the next time we started it up. Another tap with a big rock, and it was good. Last time I ran it, he was standing there with the rock, we counted to 60, and... didn't miss a beat :) Hasn't died from a stuck needle since.

One reply on this site said awhile ago he gives them a small tap when installing to seat the rubber tip.

I tried that "small tap" trick and ended up tossing that particular needle valve. Some of the rubber tips are good, some are not, and it doesn't make any difference who made the kit or who you bought it from. I prefer to re-use the all steel valves if they will clean up good.

I dunno Dave,

Sometimes they work just fine; then, the next will be just like you are experiencing, they will go to actin' up.

I've always liked the straight brass ones, tho.

Dave,Two things to do are to take a small file to the sides of the needle valve(the fit inside of the seat is too tight). The other problem with a lot of carbs is the little pull down wire between the needle valve and the float is missing. If you have any dirt or rust in the tank there is not enough room for the needle valve to move freely.
