Mornin' All,

This should be an easy fix and it's turnin' out to be a real bone-fide nightmare.

Can anyone tell me where to get that funny-threaded adaptor for the heat gauge thermocoupler?

The threads in the head are 1/2" pipe and when I got the tractor, it was plugged off; I see why now, cause this new gaugeset cost me $180!

The gauge is not pipe thread and it's not brass thread. I've been to every store in town and they just shrug their shoulders and look at me funny. :>(

Anybody know what's going on with this rascal?

Thanks,

Allan

Allan,

If you go to an auto parts store, you can get an adapter for any automotive style temp gauge. When I need them, I buy this kit that has several different pipe diameter adapters in it. If you cannot find that, just buy the cheapest coolant temp you can find and it will contain one.

Good luck. It sounds like Gene B may already have you fixed up though.

Brian,

Already been that route and hauled 6 adaptors home; they are a completely different animal entirely.

The original tractor senders use some sort of a "British thread"?

Dunno,

Allan

Allen if you would go to just about any OLD I H machanic 99.99 % of the time he will have a dozen of them layen in his junk box it is the same fitting that is used on all I H temp gauges and most of the time when we would change out a gauge we would just throw the fitting in the a can or in the tool box. I'll bet i have atleast 4 or 5 of then setting someplace.

Tractor Vet, while we're on this subject, what's the trick for getting one of those fittings out of the head?

What the bulb or just the fitting If it is the bulb stuck well some good penatrating oil and a lot of luch if it si the fitting a 6 point socket and breaker bar or if it rounded off then a die grinder and a lot of luck . I have had to work my but off to sane the temp sending capsule on a bunch of 06-66 that were stuck to save the guy from buying a gauge cluster.

Thank you. I was asking about just the fitting, tried removing a couple of them prior to reworking the head just so they wouldn't get damaged, both times decided to leave them in place and just be careful, looked like I was going to have to wreck them just to get them out, and didn't want to do that.

Allen, can ya bring it to a machine shop and have them make an adapter with the threads you need, them guys can make just about everything and they are ussualy cheaper than some new parts at parts stores.

Thanks Dave,

I just talked to Gene Bender on the phone. He runs down to his shop and says he found one that has those fine threads and he will mail it up here.

It's the weirdest thing ya ever saw; pipe on the outside and "almost" a national fine on the inside.

What a darned nice bunch of people who hang out here! :>)

Me too Hal,

And, that's the only reason I bought the new gauge, 'cause the other one still works.

But, the adaptor didn't come with the new gauge either. So then, I run to every store in the county. No luck.

Local implement dealer who's parts man is a killer says, "It is manufacture specific"; whatever that means. :>(

But, Gene Bender says he can fix me up. Bless his heart!

Thought fer awhile there that I was going to have to run without a radiator cap and just watch fer steam! :>)

I think it must of been a brown-round by the name of 'Jose, 'cause the tag says "Gauge Cluster assembled in Mexico". :>)

Things is tho, the thermocoupler fitting is identical to the original.

Mornin Alan are you sure they gave you the right sending unit. I've never heard of the adaptor. But I've never replaced one before the 56 series.

Hi Gary,

This is off the Hydro70. Should be the same all the way from 656 thru 686. Looks identical to the old one, which by the way, still worked but was just hangin' there and this is why I ordered the new gauge; thinking I would get the adaptor.

There were only two left nationwide and that's why I grabbed this one. Now I have two working gaugesets and can't tie either into the head.

I tried this little bit of farmer engineering, but of course it won't work; won't warm up enough to register.

This one is a head scratcher.
