Mid-summer I did some work on my M. Had radiator restored and installed new Temp gauge. No problems til last week. Was clearing some snow(1 hr.) When I shut her down the radiator was gurgling pretty good.(Front grille not covered)(15 degrees outside) Was a little low on coolant. Added anti-freeze but know mixture is more water than a-f. Didn't brush snow away from gauges.(Temp around 230) Moved snow tonite and heard rad. gurgling and spewing lite brown liquid out overflow.(Temp 190) Do I drain and fill 50/50? I hope I haven't damaged anything. The temp gauge barely even moved in the summer during use. I really would appreciate any help. Thanks

Thanks to everyone involved. Hopefully this is the end of it but today I thawed it, drained it, flushed it, refilled(50/50) it then ran it. Moved snow for 40 minutes. Temp gauge barely moved and no overflowing or gurgling. I'll keep a close eye on it and let ya know if problems.

I think your engine had ice and probably restricted the flow of coolant. I think you were very lucky it didn't damage the block. Happy
tractoring & for the coming holidays too. Hal

If the coolant doesn't have enough anti freeze it wiil freeze when the fan blows cold air thru the radiator. This keeps the mixture from circulating and causes the engine to heat up and will cause it to lose coolant out the over flow.I had this happen years ago and ended up with a cracked block. Cover the radiator and warm it up and drain it down far enough to add the required amount of anti freeze. Run it enought to mix the coolant well and you should be okay.

El toro and williamf, thanks for the replies. Basically, the radiator was all water during the summer and most likely froze to some extent now in winter. When I added the a-fz the other day, mixture was then probably 80/20(too much water). Whenever we climb out of single digit temps I will drain, flush and refill with 50/50. Should there be any damage as long as the fluid level is still close to the top? I need to move more snow today and am leary of starting it. Thanks again...

If your coolant doesn't have enough protection
I would warm up the tractor & drain the system.
You can buy the 50/50 antifreeze already mixed by Prestone or buy the raw and mix this with 50% water. I keep an empty antifreeze container and pour 1/2 of raw antifreeze into that container and then add water to both containers. That gives you 2 gallons of 50/50 mixed antifreeze. Be sure to shake the containers so it is mixed well. Pour this mixture into your cooling system
and then run the engine to circulate the mixture
throughout the engine. You do not want to put this off. Those blocks will crack. Hal

Hal's right about check the thermostat and you ought to refill with 50/50. Antifreeze is free compared to what can happen without it. The overflowing when it's hot is most likely from over filling. When you check the level cold you should just be able to touch the surface of the coolant with the longest finger you can stick in the radiator.
Good luck, Wm

I would check that thermostat to make sure it's opening & isn't stuck closed. Place in a pan of water and heat to see if it will open a around 180-190 degrees. Hal
PS: Was your antifreeze mixture 50/50? Your radiator may have frozen if you didn't have enough protection.
